Let say I got two job offers for a software developer role. One is working for rapidly growing VC funded startup(think like Grab, Garena). Another one is working for quite an early stage startup but is also funded and currently doing expansion regionally. Both offers roughly the same amount of salary, But the second one offers performance review bi-annually.

The first one is a 6-month contract, and the salary is parked under a recruitment agency first before banked into to the contract employee. Also their backend language is not the same as what I use.

The second one offers a permanent role. But is just that their database system is not something I prefer.

Which one should I choose?

I will avoid startups at all costs

Funded by overseas companies ? I felt that many are coming here to test water only, they arent serious in staying here.

Software engineering contractors are 2nd class citizens in tech companies btw. Your manager would not be responsible for your career there, you are just hired to clean up crap.

Depends on how hireable you are, and if you can afford to be choosy.

If yes, then by all means reject both and continue looking.

You are not going to get very far as a software developer if you are not willing to adapt to using new languages and services. Seriously if you refuse to take up a job because it's not using your pet database system when there are dozens of database systems out there each suited to different requirements, you may not be cut out for this career.

Not something I prefer. But I am willing to learn. Not a problem.
Just that I am still contemplating on choosing either the contract job or the permanent job.
Normally I might reject contract job but this one is from a big brand company. Will look good on resume.

You know that usually contract job by right you can’t even put the company name on your resume because you are not considered their employee right?

Hmm but who cares. As long as u work as a contract worker for the company, and you actually work on their projects, you can still put the name of the company. If not , how r u gonna write ur resume? Leave it blank? Future employers/recruiters will ask u to fill up the gap.
