There is no viable solution that does not involve paying more money.

By the time the flat is 70 years old, most of the original people who lived in one would already be dead.

The people who remain would likely be old and have no money.

Once flats reach VERS, that is when PAP will start to loose votes.

And possibly even the entire GRC.

But do all this theory match with reality?

are property prices of older flats dropping?

Actually even if hdb repossess the flat, but they never demolish and replace with something else also no point. Plus there will be a huge crowd of evicted people who would have to rent or buy new flats. So i strongly believe that to avoid the social upheaval, hdb will still allow people to continue staying in the expired flats unless they already have urgent plans to replace that plot with other building.

Option 1: allow the current inhabitants to continue living in the flat, but with condition that hdb may exercise its right to repossess flat and the inhabitants will have to clear out within 2yr.

Option 2: allow the current inhabitants to continue living in the flat, but they gotta pay subsidized rent every year, and hdb may exercise its right to repossess flat and the inhabitants will have to clear out within 2yr.

Option 3: like option 2 but even less protected, ie you gotta renew contract every year, rent is determined by hdb or open for public bidding.

haizz, this is a prime example of 'kicking the can down the road.'. If they had just told everyone that hdb is a 99yr lease, and stop giving people false hopes, they would have nipped this issue at the bud. thankfully, most of the people i know arent big on property speculation, most of them plan to live in their hdbs until they die.
People are simply naive, and isn’t that the real reason scammers are thriving in Singapore?

Just some naive people are all it takes, and reports show Singapore has more than enough of them to keep prices climbing.

umm
i think everyone knows that hdb are all 99yr lease
infact now condo mostly 99 yr lease

the problem is that the prices of housing has never went down and the gov never cared to do anything about the older hdb until SERs which made people realize its coming

even now, hdb prices still going up, or are at million dollar mark

catching up to some condo that are also 99 year

The older generation has no CPF and their HDB flat can be of help to alleviate the amount spent by their children on their healthcare cost (which is ever increasing). If those flats become zero or of lesser values, the younger generations will need to fork out a lot of their own money to take care of the old folks... Basically, another safety net is taken away...

I actually find it amusing that we went through all these supposed world class education and the a portion of the population having selective cognative dissonance to not understand what is written in plain words that 99 year lease = 99 years.. lease.

Those 99yrs condo or HDB are meant for one generation to stay. The second gen sldnt expect to continue live past 99yrs and expect govt to bail them out .
