are fan/water block backplate cooler good for cooling down gpu? those that attached to gpu backplate, hence don't require disassembly to original gpu stock fans

Of course it's useful, it whether you need such cooling....

1) gpu use mostly for intense gaming.
2) touch your backplate with a tissue after intense gaming to check if it's hot.
3) long hours of intense gaming with gpu temperature at 75c and above.

The question should be whether the GPU you are using is going to benefit a lot from improving cooling via the back of the graphic card. In my opinion, unless you are using a RTX 3090 where the rear GDDR6X runs really hot and will benefit from some active cooling, otherwise, there is no point trying to spruce up the cooling at the back of the card. You will surely see some improvement in temps, but it is not going to make a significant difference, unless the cooling solution is very poor to begin with.

thanks for replies … just wanted to know how much reduction in temp with backplate cooling. wanted to cool so that i can bump up game graphic settings

read around & seems not much at about 3℃ less. besides my gpu backplate wasn't even hot. so i think it's pointless.

hopefully gpu prices returns to norm next year :D

When there is too much heat from the front components of the card, the PCB will soak up some of the heat since there is nowhere else to transfer the heat to. In this case, the back plate will help somewhat because the heat from the PCB can be transferred to the backplate. So unless there are very hot components like VRAM at the back of the card, there is little incentive to improve cooling at the back of the card in my opinion.

there is a cutout exposing some chips (probably vram) which are hot. but backplate just warm, so guess no point adding backplate cooling. thanks!

Just wondering why TS not consider undervolting GPU for better temperature control and performance gain?
interesting idea, may just work. but still quite confused after watching undervolting tutorial with afterburner

so for the following, which parameters to use for undervolting?
idle 712mV 1365mhz 47℃
running 1050mV 1950mhz 75℃

tutorial adjustment basically edit a graph which lock gpu clock once it reaches certain voltage. is that the usual way to undervolt?

Different GPU have different undervolting setup

May I know which gpu you are using and ok to share the current afterburner original curve for reference?

thanks for video, very useful.

it's rtx2060, curve is very similar to video just that mine starts to level around 1950mhz 1050mV.

initial test using "hunter: call of the wild". so far lowest base clock -300mhz, 925mV @ 1950mhz. gpu temp drop as much as 10℃. it start to crash when i lowered to 900mV. anyway need to test for longer duration

Yes need more test and slowly adjust, 10c reduction is a good start.

If you have timespy also test it's stability with stress test.

Just note not all gpu can go below 900mv at least myself cannot and 925mv is most stable for me.

yes already happy with 10℃ reduction.

strangely "genshin impact" keep crashing with undervolt:rolleyes:. anyway don't need to undervolt to play this game.

It need some test as sometime it could mean the boost clock adjusted is too high or too low.

The best boost clock you can try was check your gpu product page and see what is the advertised boost clock meaning if my GPU boost clock show as 1935mhz then I will set 925mv + 1935mhz.

if my GPU advertised boost clock is 1850mhz, then I will set 925mv + 1850mhz.

Then slowly test on game and note which is ok and which is not. No need to immediately adjust just need to test more to find out which game not stable with the uv setting.

Just another note no need to adjust the gpu memory and any increase will only add on more temperature to the GPU vram hotspot and the gain is not worth it.

If it is crashing, then try and raise the voltage slowly. I generally give it a buffer because different games load the GPU differently. So it is unavoidable that if you try and lower voltage too much, some games or loads will crash the GPU.

yeah stable at 950mV but i did some further adjustment to lower the voltage

New adjustments
2) base clock offset -200mhz 900mV @ 1800mhz, base voltage 750mV, GPU temp (same as 1)

3) base clock offset -200mhz 875mV @ 1800mhz, base voltage 750mV, GPU temp drop further 1~3C
most of the time running at boost clock 1800mhz. gpu util% up too which is good

will stick to 3 if it doesn't run into any issues later

Since afterburner have 5 preset available you can save all your 3 setting for testing purposes.

Next step your can further improve the temperature by changing the GPU auto fan mode to manual fan speed setting between 65% to 70% for constant cooling performance (increase slowly to your comfort level with the fan noice)

Do consider your PC case cooling too as it will help to further reduce the temperature.

Just one thing to note for undervolting there are limitations as if gpu does not have enough power it will not stable for overall system performance.

I would suggest for GPU stress test like timespy stress test which need at least 97% to pass. (If you do not have the full version then can wait for sales just around S$4)

thanks for your suggestions

don't intend to make any further changes for now, just monitor stability for longer period
when gaming, fan speed already around 70% & gpu temp <70C. happy with the result & don't see any needs for further improvements

did change power management from max > optimal, so temp & voltage are much lower when not gaming

ran heaven benchmark for few times, so far so good
