GPU blackout under heavy load

Hey guys,

I'm on Sapphire Vega 64 GPU for 1.5 years.

Other than being super loud and hot, it's been working fine until I started experiencing black outs 5-15 minutes into graphic intensive games. By black out I mean the monitor loses signal and the sound is gone, GPU goes quiet (I assume it's shut down). The computer seems to remains on, fans still spin.

What I tried:
- Uninstalled driver using DDU
- Downgrade driver
- Undervolting
- Replaced an older GPU and it was fine

I RMAed it and got back the same model. Tested it and has the same problem. I read up on Reddit, it seems to be a common issue for this model. One fix I did this time was to have each 8-pin connector gets its own wire from the PSU instead of daisy chaining. The problem improves now my games last longer about 30-60 minutes before it blacks out. It almost always blacks out when I run 3D Mark.

I reckon what I could is troubleshoot it with a different PSU or a PC entirely. It's quite a hassle to open it up so I just want to get some opinions before I jump into it.

You tried underclocking it? Maybe even a dust off on the fans too.

What are the specs of your PSU? You should always use 2 cables instead of splitters.

I feel it's either GPU overheating due to bad airflow, try monitoring your GPU temp
Or PSU having problem, might be intermittent power

Seems like a PSU issue to me as Vega 64 draws a substantial amount of power.

How old is your PSU, what is the wattage and brand, what certification, bronze/silver/gold/platinum etc?

I have a PowerColor Red Devil VEGA64 and it runs pretty okay'ish with temps of up about mid 70 under gaming load. I've had no such issue with my card, I suspect yours is due to either bad airflow or PSU. I have a HX1000 Plat hence, I suspect that it may be a PSU issue for OP. I recall having one or two such instances where my rig seems to me running but screen goes blank (over the years), but that was due to driver issue...which has just occurred to me to be a possible cause of the issue as well.

Recommended 850W PSU for Vega 64, it's known.

I have the SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon™ RX Vega64 8G HBM2 used to be powered by a 10yr+ old Silverstone Strider 850W Modular PSU for a few weeks ok until there's a slight burnt smell and showed that the very old PSU has deteriorated and PC shut down sometimes.
Replaced with a new Corsair HX1000i model 80+ Platinum high performance 1000W PSU and the problems are gone forever.

Old or New PSU, my SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon™ RX Vega64 run at 70°C highest and below under gaming load. This may be due to the very well ventilated Corsair Obsidian Series 450D Mid Tower Case which was previously highly rated for gaming setups.

I tried with a DP and a HDMI cable on all the slots on the GPU.

Less than 2 years old. My PSU is EVGA 750W G3


Since airflow could be the issue, could you guys tell from the picture whether I'm having an airflow issue? I have 3 inflow (front+bottom) and 3 outflow (rear+top). The 2 fans right below the GPU are also meant to draw the airflow into the GPU.

I don't do OC. I only started undervolting since I started having blackouts.

Seems to me that it may be blocking the fan of the blower style cooler on the card.

I believe that's the gpu support bracket.

To prevent/delay gpu sagging

Same nightmares with RX5700 on 4k. Changed HDMI cables, PSU, update Bios, reinstall drivers, win10... doesn't help... many users on reddits have the same intermittent issues... swap in a Nvidia all normal ;-)

Didn't bother to RMA, undervolt and use it for MS office, no more AMD Radeon...

Super overkill for MS office lol...
My Prism+ monitor is using Freesync, looks like I'm stuck with Radeon if I want to maximize the performance.

Honestly, I'm not keen on taking the GPU apart.
