GPU blackout under heavy load

Same nightmares with RX5700 on 4k. Changed HDMI cables, PSU, update Bios, reinstall drivers, win10... doesn't help... many users on reddits have the same intermittent issues... swap in a Nvidia all normal ;-)

Didn't bother to RMA, undervolt and use it for MS office, no more AMD Radeon...

Just go for recommended 850W PSU... mine is OLD 10yrs+ 850W PSU that has deteriorated

A friend suggests mounting a water-cooling system on GPU. Anyone's using that?
Honestly, I'm not keen on taking the GPU apart.

Me, if you consider an aio attached to a gpu a "water cooling system". It is probably an easier way to cool the die at the expenses of passive cooling for the vrms.

NZXT G12 with a compatible AIO will keep your GPU much cooler than using the stock cooler.

Super overkill for MS office lol...
My Prism+ monitor is using Freesync, looks like I'm stuck with Radeon if I want to maximize the performance.

Nvidia graphics cards now support freesync monitors.

Unless u enjoy tearing apart the GPU...
Before going ahead with liquid cooling, u can try :
(1) Lower the room aircon to 18+ and do a long stress test with benchmark tools.
(2) Monitor with Hwinfo to see the max GPU temp.

If it maintain 70-80 and blackout, for sure its not the cooling...can start to look somewhere else...

I'm NOT promoting another card. Just relating my exprience with AMD RX5700 series during gaming... although some problems has been solved since day 1, some still persists... it could be driver, game, vbios issues.. but if you do A/B test and all these problems did not appears then it becomes obvious, this is exactly why many people in reddit, youtube been ranting about until today... so much so that gamers ditching amd mainstream flagship card is even make into a video...

FYI :undervolt is now officially supported in Adrenalin provided by AMD.

Ok guys, thanks for all the advice! I have found the problem and fixed it. It's a little anti-climatic but I'm happy because I don't have to spend any money.

First, I wanted to get the heat issue out of the way, so I opened up the side panel, front/top covers and turn on the aircon. The GPU temp peaked at 80 deg c on Heaven and 3D Mark and yet still tripped, and this time it even black out at boot.

I swapped with an older, confirmed working GPU. I plugged in the power connector from my Vega to the 6-pin power connector, tested no issue. I then swapped in the other power connector and tested - black out at boot, lol.

I managed to dug out a spare power cable, swapped with the one in question.
No more black out after running for hours.

Conclusion: one of the PSU cable degraded and became faulty. It's my first modular PSU. Never had such problem with traditional PSU...
