GPU or PSU issue ? Auto restart when loading Game

Good Day All,

My computer has been restarting itself whenever i tried to load map/games.
The Games can be started but the map/save loading always cause restart.

Personally i have tried using Prime95 under the "most power consumption" option. And it ran finish the testing without any rebooting. Printscreen at highest core temperature.http://tinypic.com/r/2dmfsph/9

I ran Furmark too, and it immediately rebooted after 0.5sec.

While i am quite sure that GPU is the culprit, how can i be absolutely sure that it is the PSU not being able to supply enough power to the GPU ? Has the Prime95 tested the PSU to the same level as the GPU power consumption ?
Please advise what i can do to determine if it is the PSU or GPU which is faulty. Many thanks !

Interesting, if i alt tab out before the loading scene and wait for the loading to finish before alt-tabing back to the game, it doesnt restarts itself.

2) Talo principle
Able to startup game, but when i create new game, it restarts when loading.

3)Serious Sam 3
It just restart at game startup.

It seems like the moment you load the GPU it crashes. Highly likely is GPU faulty based on this situation but to be sure, any spare GPU or borrow one from your friend to test?

If the other gpu don't crash, then your gpu need to rma. If the other gpu also crashes, try change the psu cable or/and port (if you psu is modular), otherwise just rma the psu.

If all of the above is false, then could be your mobo PCIE slot got issue.

I was once playing Mass Effect Andromeda and I kept on experiencing random shut downs. Turns out, it was my Overclock. I ran at stock speeds and didn't experience anymore crashes.

If that doesn't help, your FSP PSU may be the issue which can be caused by lack of power to the system. It seems that a lot of complains in this forum about PC crashes and a lot of keywords that pop up tend to have FSP somewhere in it. So I would advise avoiding it altogether no matter what some people with the best of luck tend to say about FSP and not having any problems with it.

But first, you may try switching to another spare cable for the PSU to the GPU. If that still doesn't help, you may follow SinguPingu's advice and RMA the GPU and let distro test it with furmark. If it's fine, rma the PSU.

I had the same problem as you when running furmark. It was a PSU issue for me. Managed to get a relatively new seasonic bronze PSU from another hwzer to use for now and I can run furmark with no restarts. Will have to RMA my PSU soon. My PSU also from TD.

I used unigine and aida64 to stress my GPU and CPU respectively to make sure none of them are faulty.

But I don't have restart problems when loading games, only when playing games.

Thank you all for the advice, just some updates.

My computer crash numerous times again this afternoon while i was playing dota, so i reduce the graphic settings to the minimum and was able to finish a game with any hiccups.

While playing, i also touching the steel bar that was connected to the cooling fins, it was damn hot although MSI afterburner shows that it only 45degree max. I dont overclock my graphic or system at all. I only installed MSI afterburner this aftenroon so that i can turned on the GPU fans manually before loading any games.

I dont overclock my gpu though. Only installed afterburner today to turn on the fans before loading dota 2. It does helps a bit after i turned on the gpu fans.

Hi Guys,

Some updates. I didnt went to RMA my GPU cause i have to take a half day leave to do so. So what i did was i took out my GPU and went to my bro house and insert my GPU into his computer.

Turns out that the GPU worked perfectly on his computer, i was able to run highest graphic setting in DOTA 2 on his computer.

Thereafter i came back to my house and insert my GPU back into my computer. WALA, it worked perfectly again !! I was able play at DOTA 2 at max setting too. (Before attempting to play any games, i run memtest86 for 2 pass.). Then i suspect that it could be the PCle or the power cable to the GPU was loose.

Fast forward 2 days later, the computer started to restart halfway through games again. The condition deteriorated and the computer continued to restart as even as i lower the graphic setting in the games. Today, i tried to take out and assemble the GPU numerous times as i thought the problem might be loose hardware connection. However it didnt help much.

Going for RMA is the last option i want because i have to take a half day leave (i only have 10 per year)

Had the same issue with my FSP PSU in the past.

Intensive GPU game would cause auto reboot.. turned out the PSU was faulty. Replacing it solved the problem

Be careful with further testing, coz the lack of sufficient power to the GFX can damage it as well. Abt 1 month after replacing the PSU, the GFX started to lose video output to the monitor when in intensive GPU games.

PS: the reason why ur PC could continue playing the game well when lowering the gfx setting is because lower setting requires less load from the GFX card, in turn using less power from the PSU

Check your PC's cooling. If you're saying things are running hot, then it might mean airflow in the casing isn't ideal.

But your power supply does seem a little underpowered there.

Don't think is Psu issue, probably is motherboard. Wouldn't rule out Psu. I suggest u Rma psu first as it is easier to remove than mobo

Don't think so. 600w definitely more than enough to power a single GTX 970. Somemore its just Dota only not FPS.

TLDR: PSU is the problem, RMA and now ran smoothly.

hello peers, one final update.

So the problem continued and i tried different troubleshooting methods to identify the problem. "run MemTest86", "Unplugged GPU and plugged back", "do different stuff and then run stress test" eg.. Sometimes the PC last longer in games and sometimes it doesnt. I couldnt find out the source of the problem.

It was until i tried to adjust the position of the CPU tower and the power supply suddenly cut itself by the slight movement. So i guess indeed some of the forumers are right that the PSU is the problem. I had postponed RMA-ing the PSU as it will need a half day leave.

Fast forward to yesterday, i took the FSP PSU for RMA at Tech Dynamics. Service was really good, they did a test on the spot with a higher spec GPU and i was lucky the problem was replicated there. Immediately given a choice to replace with Superflower 650W silver or pay $40 for a Superflower 650W Gold. I go for silver as i dont think it is worth $40 for Gold with the remaining warrenty.
Now everything runs smoothly, i had a game in DOTA2 with max graphic setting without any problem.
