Been reading up about 5700 and 1660ti.

Is it worth that additional $100? Or is it not worth?

CPU - ryzen 5 3600
Monitor - 1080p 144hz
Usage - Video editing/Gaming

Oh ya, for 5700, there's a few variants, e.g. gigabytes , has blower and windforce, blower st
, it's fine to get blower style right? 🤔

Kinda like the blower design more

blower style is noisy and has higer temp

5700 if you want to have high 144fps at 1080

Do research on the video editing software you using, whether does it favor/utilize AMD or Nvidia GPU.

On a gaming standpoint, 5700 is a better buy. If system fan noise is not the kind of thing that bother you, the blower design is totally fine. If you want an affordable and decent model of 5700, I suggest Sapphire Pulse or Powercolor Red Dragon. Both are relatively decent price and cool well for open air cooler design.

Nvidia graphics card has better opengl performance than amd graphics card.
If you do video editing/gaming than require opengl, it's better to go for nvidia.

Warranty shouldn't be the only judge. While the shorter warranty period could be a turn off for you, the quality of the cooler made by sapphire are usually pretty decent as they cool adequately without generating too much noise. Considered as the standard for decent AMD GPU manufacturer.

If warranty is your concern, do get all the other brands which offer 3 years warranty, whichever that is the closest to you or the most convenient for you to reach.

Another option you may consider is 1080ti 2nd hand for 100 more. Same price as a new 5700XT but a lot more powerful card and loads of them available with warranty in the 2nd hand market due to mining craze of 2017-18.

My sapphire r9 290 kaput just before 3 years. If that's another brand, I would have been able to RMA it. :(

I know tech stuff usually is dependent on luck but if the manufacturer is not able to provide a warranty period on par to it's competitor, it just shows that they have poor confidence in their own products or they don't want to do after sales support.

Agreed. The 2 years warranty is a turn off for me. Although I do love sapphire cooler and design. The 2 years warranty is what is keeping me from buying sapphire gpu's unless it is going for a huge discount due to clearance sales etc then might be worth.

More prefer to buy palit and zotac's gpu now as they have their 5 years warranty. I have gpu that dies at the 3 year mark. Even an old eagle 8600gts that dies only after 2 years. So gpu warranty is one big thing I will look into when i'm buying new gpus. Or even second hand ones. Of course, I have learned since then on how to take care of gpus now by tweaking the fan profile or setting gpu temp limit to keep the temp from running as cool as possible when gaming to prolong it's lifespan. Undervolting, underclocking etc to keep temp low etc. So to ensure that it can last for 5-10 years even after it's warranty period is over.

This is very true, Sapphire has good quality products that will last (unless your luck is bad) but just dowan to do after sales support for customers by giving only a 2 year warranty that's below industry standard of 3 years (and 4/5 years by some other brands).

The lousier after sales support compared to competitor brands is a turn off for sapphire customers like me, but problem is that it's not hurting their sales enough for them to change it so LL suck thumb lor.

@zhihao57

blower style usually clocked slightly lower, run hotter/fans louder hence cheaper. however it exhausts hot air from the rear of the GPU directly outside the PC case, so it's good for ppl using cases with bad/cramped airflow because the normal open air GPU cooler style dumps hot air inside the case not outside.

its also good for those ppl who want to do custom cooling themselves, since they will not be using the default one that comes with blower. No point buying expensive good cooling design if you're going to be removing it (some may argue that premium designs come w/ better binned chips but the cost is not worth it, you might as well go to the next higher tier of GPU card instead of staying on same tier but more premium cooler design).

Anyway if you like the blower design more, then just go for the blower design. Some elitists might harp about how bad blower designs are, but it's not like it is so bad that the world comes crashing down. It may be slightly lower mhz/hotter/louder but don't forget you are paying less for it also. Plus you can always undervolt your card.

from logical increments abt video editing:
When it comes to graphics cards for video editing, NVIDIA used to have an advantage with its CUDA acceleration. Today, AMD's OpenCL offers similar performance for software that supports it. Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve do well with both AMD and NVIDIA, although Adobe tends to optimize more for NVIDIA.

Depends on what you're using for video editing, some may be less optimized
for the other GPU. Google it yourself for this.

For nvidia cards it's worth noting that Zotac and Palit have 5 years local warranties frm local distributors (you have to remember to register warranty asap after purchase for full 5 years warranty).

Gaming performance wise the AMD 5700/5700xt more value for money.

Can also look at 2nd hand market for mining GTX 1080(TI) if the price is right, if you're comfortable with mining cards.

As mentioned, warranty lower doesn't mean not as good. For eg Apple vs huawei.

Well, for me, I die die take any good Android over Apple anytime, anyday. =:p:D

Personally, while I like Sapphire (AMD fanboy here, Sapphire and PowerColor are the two'go to' brands) and I think their Nitro+ is awesome, I'd look at PowerColor Red Devil series as a very good alternative due to the 2 years vs 3 years warranty hangup.

Does mining have a negative effect on a GPU? Or is it mostly because they are used 24/7?

Yeah. If there's a good alternative, why shortchange yourself by going for the one with shorter warranty.
