Lost touch on GPUs for a long time already. I remember back then need to buy the fastest GPUs then can play games at highest settings w/o lag (Crysis was a PC killer) And its only at 1080p. These days, even a GTX1060 or RX580 can run games at max settings at 1080p. Only 4K need those super high end cards.

But then, I still old skool, stuck at 1080p. No plans to upgrade anytime soon. I feel 1080p good enough, I don't need so sharp till can see pimples on the face.

Can't imagine the new titan cards.... can run games at 200fps?

1080p is still the most popular resolution but try stepping up and even the 1060 level cards will struggle big time

Upcoming games like Star Citizen, etc, will appreciate the GPU horsepower.

More new screens are 1440p

And remember, your ideal minimum and average frame rates should be at or above your monitor refresh rate, and with those 144 is becoming the norm.

Talking about 1440p/4k and >60hz. I just feel that adoption is still very slow. Read the latest news that 144hz gaming monitors just has only 1-2% market share (~2.5 million units shipped) Maybe its due to cost. 1440p also has just slightly 2% in steam hwsurvey. 1080p and 1366 x768 are by far most popular. Shows that many pple gaming on laptops.

Hopefully prices will come down more and drive adoption up.

I agreed man. We are getting lots of crappy console ports these days. Sigh. One good news is that 4k is coming out for consoles and also vr. This is going to drive up hardware requirements and hopefully better games for pc.

Ironically it all depends on amd now... if amd dont make significantly better hardware for consoles, i feel its not going to help for pc. Developers will just tune down te graphics for console and force pc gamers to accept it.

These days, our GPU is still under-powered while technology around us like PC monitors and UHD TVs are evolving.

Even the latest 1080 Ti can only run a 2 year old PC game like GTA 5 at max setting around 60 FPS at 4K while the upcoming monitors can push 4K at 144 Hz with HDR.

Upscaling 1080P video content to 4K with MadVR was a lot more demanding on my previous GPU with its fans ramping up. Luckily my current 1080 Ti can handle it much better and stay quiet with less video hiccups as well. That is not to say, there is still no room for improvement.

So I do look forward to the future and its technological marvels.

It's ok if you don't. We all belong in a different tier in PC gaming anyway and that is fine.

It is one of the factors but not the whole story. I mostly see many PC players play games like DOTA 2, LOL, CSGO, Battlegrounds. And these games garner tonnes of PC players and even viewers to tournaments. Now tell me. Do they in any shape or form look like a graphically demanding game? Doubt so.

Developers prioritized consoles because there was more money to be made as console players tend to play new games more constantly than PC players who prefer to stick to their go-to game (me included).

Doubt there are many, if not any, PC exclusive game that is as visually stunning as it is engaging, story wise, as games such as Uncharted 4 and even Horizon Zero Dawn.

So it looks to me like even some of the PC players are at fault for holding some visually stunning games back.

Just so you know, Developers tend to have test kits set around the majority of what PC players have and play with.

The top 12 GPUs with the biggest share totals up to 38.86% of the Steam player base. Number one on that list being the GTX 970 followed by the GTX 750 Ti and then the 960 before jumping to the 1060.

So maybe if you want to blame, perhaps you should also blame on the PC casuals that make up a huge chunk of the PC market that results in PC games not looking visually as pleasing?

Sometimes it's the game itself not optimized, hence you need a more powerful card like the GTX1080Ti to run smoothly.

If only all games for PC are as optimized like MGS 5..

sum people w/o lag is 30 fps; most people 60 fps; atas people 120; competitive people 144fps+

so overpowered or not - is really subjective.

Still lagging, considering 4K resolution is starting to become the norm(TV and monitor displays).... Only the most powerful cards can run it generally okay.

They are certainly overpowered. You can tell by looking at game development cycle and cost, AAA titles are getting more and more expensive to make because they need more time and money to make higher quality assets for screens with higher resolution. Its gotten out of control and many big companies are beginning to lose money on their AAA titles, its a matter of time before they stop spending more money on game development, less money spent on game development equates to less graphically demanding titles.

In any case the human eye cannot easily discern between 1080p and 4k unless viewed on very large screens at close range.
