If I am using Thai telco prepaid sim instead of roaming from my own SG number, I take it I have to either register the Grab app with the Thai number or can I stick back using the SG registered number with the app?

Stick to SG number, grab app will auto switch to Thailand mode. Same for Malaysia.
In Malaysia, I top up Grab pay for transport, don't have to fork out cash. You can try it BKK. That note that remaining amount will be left inside Thailand/ Malaysia wallet. So don't top up too much.

Grab pay auto deduct, don't need to look for small change. Something 500 baht driver also don't have change.
I think its best practice to always have a healthy amount of small change

In thailand its needed for BTS
in MY if you give street vendor RM$50 for RM$10 stuff they will give you black face 😅

Yes, got change quickly change some small notes. 1,000 baht is very big already, yet money change give us all in 1,000 baht note.

ironically i think changing money in Thailand is better, both for the rates and that they will give you exact 😅

1st thing i usually do is go to a 7-11 or a cafeteria, to buy something small to break my baht

I always pay for my MY/TH/Indo grab rides charged direct to credit card. Don't want to top up wallet and let grab earn interest, also no credit card benefits for topping up grab wallet.
