Graphic card dead?

Was surfing the web and PC froze. Happened 2-3 times today, but right now I'm getting BSOD when starting up with error messages.

Note that the display driver was crashing from time to time due to some issues with World of Warcraft (known issue, but no fixes from Blizzard/Nvidia) since last year.

First message was: driver verifier detected violation

Second message was: video tdr failure

I'm trying to reinstall windows to see if it fixes it but getting the same messages. Have tried "Reset/Refresh PC" through the windows CD as well but to no avail.

By the way, I have no way of booting into Windows right now, not even safe mode.

Formating and reinstalling didn't work; posting on laptop.

BSOD code? It should look like 0x000000 _ _ _, the 3 underscores being the BSOD code.

then just google "BSOD _ _ _" and see the BSOD cause.

I guess the first two messages wasn't exactly a BSOD, just a blue screen with error message.

The only true BSOD with error code I got was 0x0000001. Searched but all I saw was people saying to check SATA if it was AHCI or something.

Right now if I let it boot normally, after the windows logo, it goes into black screen and the monitor power just starts blinking, as though you just shut down the PC.

UPDATE: I think the monitor no longer detects the graphics card after the windows logo.

If the gfx is the suspect, try boot without the hard disks (i.e. disconnect them). Can you see the BIOS display on the monitor ? If no, remove the gfx, connect monitor to onboard video. If still no display on monitor, reseat RAM modules.

Hi, so I tried using the onboard video (didn't know it came with one ) and now it's installing Win8 properly.

I restarted and booted using my GTX 570 this time, reached the user login screen ( and it crashes with error message "video dtr failure, nvlddmkm". Is it safe to say the card is a goner?

I might do a RMA since it still has a year left on warranty, but I have thoughts on getting a new card as well. Any opinions?

TDR/freeze after 36 hrs was due to R319 Nvidia drivers. 320.49 and above are all R319. Best to stick with 314.22, the last stable driver. Install this version.

That said, your card may have already been fried by R319 drivers. On certain cards, voltages were raised after R319 was installed.

So not even BIOS detected? If BIOS detected probably you can try safe mode and use the DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) 6.3 stickied on GeForce forums. It does a very good clean uninstall, then try 314.22. If bo bian, guess you'll have to deal with Ban Leong. Just be careful when updating drivers. Recent Nvidia drivers are not good in stability. Read up GeForce forums before you jump on to a new one.

You still have the driver disc that came with the gfx card ? Just a hunch, your win8 is 64bit ? Are you using the correct driver i.e. 32 bit or 64 bit ?

Does it boot into Windows on safe mode (f8) all the way to desktop? Of course, it will be generic Microsoft VGA 2006 drivers. Point is, will it blend. If it blends, installing an appropriate 314.22 *might* help.

This PC was recommended by this forum, and then modified(specs and availability) a little by fortran. If they were to change another model for me, how would I know whether my PSU can support the new card?

If you're doing a single card sure can. Power consumption always drop as the lithography shrinks. i.e. Kepler's (28nm) flagship vs Fermi's (40nm) flagship. It will still be true in future architectures.

Unless you're running SLI, no need to upgrade PSU. That kind of 500-600W PSU is futureproof enough for single GPU setups.

Btw shouldn't be improper setup. As I've implied earlier, R319 GeForce driver screwed you.

It's quite ****ed up that after about 1/2 a year, Nvidia drivers are still screwed with the R319 issues. Hopefully 2 WHQLs later it will be completely addressed.

Yeah, I wish I learnt about the driver issues earlier. I'm pretty certain they fried my GTX 460 which had been working fine for slightly over two years.

I started getting artefacts, the fans would high rev for no reason and I had troubles booting up. The times when I managed to boot up, I couldn't get past the Windows logo.

Anyway, it's past the warranty period and I got a GTX 760. They'd better not fry that too.
