Thanks, totally forgotten about this movie. I watched the film and read the book back in sec school. Highly recommended award-winning film about true war journalism and the Cambodian war.

If TS is talking about movies b4 1970s, I would recommend 7 Samurai, Roshonmon and Metropolis. But then, he had missed out cube, devil's advocate, million dollar baby, steamboy, the lovely bones, what lies beneath, atonement and plesantville.

An Italian movie that is scary with a good buildup is REC 1 and 2, after the ring.

Let me recommend some good movies.

DEAD END

dead+end.jpg

Ratings : 8.5/10 stars
This is a low budget film. But don't let that get to you. I was hooked from the moment the movie starts. It's about a family who travels to their Gramp's place and they took a shortcut and that led to the depth of the woods and a whole lot of mystery.

I was surprised that even though, the movie was not as expensive as it were, the storyline was quite intense at times and the way the actors potrayed what a 'family should be', i got to give them extra credit. You have yourself a responsible dad, a passive mother, a rebellious kid, an teen-turn-mature daughter with her matured-wanna be boyfriend. This movie is dark but it's not gory and stuff, even though there was 2 bits of scene where there's a little bit of gore involved, i think it still overall watchable.

Sometimes I really wonder, does all the advancement in technology in movie making really make our recent movies real dull or reduces the competency of creativity. I seriously recommend to everyone this movie, it's a must watch. This is how scary movies should be... where at least there are not much 'out-of-the-sudden' sound effects pop-out to scare you. It's just pure and plain simple analogy of creativity and storyline that will keep you watching it.

However, i was confused at the end...the ending perhaps. Maybe i was just too dumb to understand it. haha.
Still, give it a try, you won't regret it.

The Seventh Seal

Ratings : 9/10 stars.

Life is unpredictable. Sometimes death can be as near as a strand of hair and pass us by.

Please take note however that this movie is a Swedish movie and they speak Swedish language. One thing i would give good appreciation about this flick is the integration of the most beautiful artistic peotic words that they used.

It's quite interesting on how the story goes. A knight who just returned from the crusade war, was visited by Death. And so, he challenges Death to a game of chess. To know the rest, watch this movie.

The funny part about these old movies are the trailers. The movie is damn good, but the trailer really spoils everything. I guess the old ways were quite corny at times.

Sometimes, a black and white movie, doesn't mean it's not good. You'll be surprised that the old movies without any CGI effect or assists, could beat a lot of movies in terms of entertainment that we have today.

A Perfect World

perfect_world_a_1993_685x385.jpg

Ratings : 9/10 Stars

I hate Kevin Costner. I used to be. When I saw him acted this movie, I really think he deserved an Oscar nominee. He couldn't played it any better or natural which I think sincerely think that no one could. The title 'A Perfect World' is confusing because I don't see how's the storyline and the title link up to each other. Probably because I think that Kevin Costner is probably looking for the perfect world. Perhaps, i am not sure.

This movie would clearly justify that Kevin Costner is a great actor. I was astonished that compared to any of his other movies, that this role could be no more than perfect for him. In this movie, he plays as a convict who escapes from the jail. All twist and turn, while running away the small boy was taken hostage (not intentionally, but circumstancially) by Costner.

The boy somewhat lives on a strict religious doctrine called the 'Jehovah Witness'. And he lived with his single mum (dad ran away), and from thereon, he looked on Costner as role of a father.

To know more, watch the movie & you shall be not dissappointed. Forgot to add one more thing, Clint Eastwood is in this movie too, being the sheriff.

Great cast, great movie, great story...what can you ask for more?

Sleuth (1972)

sleuth1.jpg

Ratings : 9.5/10 stars

My uncle recommended me so much to watch this movie. You can't believe the trials and tribulations that I have to go through to finally watch it. This is sleuth, please don't confuse yourself with the current remake. The original sleuth is made in 1972 with Michael Caine and Laurence Oliver.

What made me so interested in watching this was that my uncle told me that this whole movie, there's only 2 actors only. I was curious, movies with only 2 actors? How can that be? So, I took a little bit of research on this movie and found out that this movie is based on a play by don-know-whoever it is. Anyway, this movie is an art. A masterpiece! I must say!...
If you must know, the movie entangles between 2 characters as mentioned before. Oliver is a rich bugger, who have a certain fetish for games that fiddles with human emotions. And he invites Caine to his home, where Caine announces his intention to marry Oliver's wife. So, thereon, a game of murder, mystery and vengeance takes upon these 2 people. A pit of wits, i guess.

GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS

ggr.jpg

Ratings : 9.5/10 stars.
Glengarry Glen Ross is a movie that shows the life of real-estate agents. It comprises of great cast such as Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin and the rest of the gang. It's a movie about survivability, about how fragile having a job is and when you don't meet the expectations, out you go.

There's no courtesy in the dialogues in the movie. Expect a little bit of rough here and there, but it thus reflects on the real life. One of the memorable scene which I find really strong, was Alec Baldwin giving his motivational speech to the crew. It's really a strong scene, and I felt a little bit of punch from it.

Just finished watching Yasujiro Ozu's 1953 masterpiece, Tokyo Story, a movie with a simple but transcendent storyline that remains relevant and reflect on our modern society even after 60 years when it was first released.

The acting and original cinematography technique created a movie way that is years ahead of it's era. Although the movie was in black and white, I found myself absorbed into the storyline and the subtle messages that the actors conveyed. The dialogue and character development were also done to an immaculate level. Although there wasn't any outright villians, the difference in the level ethics and moral between the characters were potrayed through subtle dialogues. The director, Ozu, has created an uncomplicated yet throughly absorbing storyline.

I would recommand anyone with an interest in international cinema to spend 2 hrs watching this classic of Japanese cinema. You will not be disappointed.

7 Samurai and Roshonmon are classics of international cinema and although Metropolis is recognised to be one of the top pre-war movie made in the golden 20s era, it is just too weird for me, watching a sci-fi movie made in the 20s. I wasn't even sure if Metropolis was a talkie or silent. Germany being the movie centre of the world in the 20s certainly made some great movies, but i identify more with the modern era movies of Das Boots and The Live of Others of the modern era (which in my opinon is better than every single Hollywood i ever watched) rather than German movie made in the 20s, which unfortunately for me, doesn't sustain my interest.

Nice, will check out the Tokyo Monogatari film. Never knew there's so much films about post-war Japan on youtube.

My personal fav is Akira Kurosawa's Ikiru
