Green server for home?

I'm looking for a "green" server that i can run 24hr at home.

requirements:
- low power consumption
- minimal heat
- minimal fan sound
- able to run window7 or linux (must support xwindow)

got such hardware? how much? and where to get in SG?

Latest 4th generations Intel cpu is low power enough. Get a Gxxx series pentium or celeron is enough for most home server usage & since few generations ago, Intel HD graphics is fully supported in Ubuntu linux with hardware acceleration to playback Full HD video.

was looking at this Intense PC with Ivybridge CPU - The Slim, Tough, Powerful Fanless PC | Tiny Green PC, but i think SG don't sell right?

next option, Intel NUC Kit (Model D54250WYK) Desktop specs, is it good?

any recommendation?

Suggest PCTheme or Mynexcomm in Sim Lim Square. Use the onboard Intel HD graphic that came with the processor. No discrete graphic card because that's the one usually giving out the highest amount of heat. Processor goes with haswell pentium/celeron if you really intend for home server. Haswell I3 is just that much more expensive & you get 4 threads 2 cores. For motherboard goes with Gigabyte/AsRock/Asus micro ATX B85 series for maximum 4 HDD setup. No point of getting those premium 87 series which gives your more SATA6 ports to go with SSD & some overclocking. Server should always go with hard disks & if you want more redundancy to protect against failure. I'll suggest software raid 1 with 2 HDD. I've done raid 1 with 2X IDE 40G in Ubuntu 12.04. Rock solid. After I removed one 40G to test it. It continue booted with the remaining 40G. And after I put back the 40G & add it back to the array. You can see the Raid 1 rebuilding itself live... while the existing 40G is chucking along running Gnome GUI just as fine. I'm going to run 14.04 LTS with 2x 500G Raid 1 on my pc next. Many years back, I had the misunderstanding that those Fake Raid that came from motherboard chipset like those in 87 series are faster. Actually, they are as they are, Fake Raid. And once they fail, you'll have problem getting the dedicated raid drivers in linux to work with the OS to recover the raid. Software raid is much more resilient & robust.

Dunno about that. The GUI tools for Linux are really really bad imho, and they are usually nothing more than just a GTK or Qt wrapper over the standard BASH commands, doing little more than capturing the standard output and pushing it to the graphical tool.

Nothing beats Windows Server where GUI tools are concerned, imho. But that's besides the point.

What about RAID 1 with dual HDD kind of set up?

Any Intel NUC is capable to do that? Or I have to use Mac Mini?
