GSync vs Freesync: Market segregation?

Competition between the 2 main (or only) players in the GPU market is not new at all, and it arguably is good for consumers like us. However, the drive to achieve a competitive edge has led to each company developing their own implementation of variable refresh rate hardware.

My concern now is that going into the future, if I wished to use this variable refresh rate technology, I would have to 'stay' with either the red or green camp. My choice of GPU or monitor, would determine what product I would buy for the other. Assuming the performance of GSync and Freesync are comparable, it would suck not to be able to swap out my GPU for a newer release from AMD since I have already 'committed' myself to Nvidia by buying a Gsync monitor. And vice versa.

That is the way I see it happening in the future and I feel it could be pretty bad for consumers like myself who are not ardent fanboys but wish to have more choices.

Think of it as this way. You getting a GSyn monitor, get Nvidia card.

If you using AMD card, use a freesyn monitor.

It is that simple.

Freesyn on a Nvidia card is possible, just that Nvidia chose not to support it. For it will kill off their "dig more money" GSyn.

Freesync is supported by VESA standard monitor which have display port version 1.2a.
MeanWhile Gsync is not an open standard/ protocol.

Either way I think we all would want to see the prices of these 2 proprietary monitor technologies to drop in price and so far that hasn't happened yet. Hopefully towards Q3/Q4 of this year and definitely in 2016 otherwise what's the point.

Actually only 1 proprietary technology.yhe other you are free to use.
