gtx 980 vs 1060

Pretty new to GFX, so hope you guys can help me out here.

I'm planning to get a new gfx card and looking at ASUS GTX980 Strix 4gb. Just find it strange that GTX1060 Strix 6gb cheaper than 980. Any reason why is that so? Ain't 1060 better than 980?

The GTX 1060 is still cheaper because its priced according to its performance tier. The 980 was also officially launched on September 2014, and based on PC Theme pricing from then till now, prices of some GTX 980s have decreased up to over $200 (originally around ~$800 to $900+).

In case you didn't know, for Nvidia card naming scheme:

GTX [XY0], where:
X indicates the generation of the card. Nvidia's newest generation of GPUs is the 10th generation, one of which is the GTX 1060 you've mentioned.
Y indicates the performance level of the card, from X50 being entry level gaming, to X80 being the highest level (not including Titan or X80Ti cards).

As to whether the GTX 1060 is better or not, performance levels between the GTX 980 and the GTX 1060 are almost the same.

1060 and 980 are evenly matched except in 4k res.
Where 980 is slightly better.

I would recommand go 1060 since it's newer cheaper lower power consumption.

If he go for asus strix 1060, price is $560-570 SRP. Might as well get Palit gtx 1070. cheaper by $5 to $10, yet getting performance of 1070.
