Price performance, R9 280

Don't care about price and stay at 1080p, 960.

Want to play at above 1440p or use custom ultra high textures or down sampling from very high resolution, 280.

I recommend 285 though, since it's not a rebrand like 280 and it's based on Tonga( DX 12/GCN 1.2, freesync, etc). TDP also not as harsh at 190 W.

I would not reccommend 285. Higher pricing, similar performance to 280, but less powerful raw specs compared to 280 (narrower memory bus, smaller amount of vram, stream processors too I believe) more energy efficient.

It's in the light of comparison to GT 960. Other that the 2GB VRAM limitation ,which 960 also have (worse due to tiny bus bandwidth), performance review is only a small 1 to 2 % variance from 280 even though the raw specs is lower. Price is about the same as 960 I believe.

Functionality wise, 285 is richer due to it being a GCN 1.2 card.

But it's OP choice, since he implicitly decide on 280 or 960.

Like that might as well buy a single r9 290x lightning or an atas gtx970.

A dual 280 will just yield a single 290x performance.

if his psu and board can support, can look into crossfiring.

below are some comments on it from Tomshardware.

I agreee with getting one GPU. 2GPUs is for a 120Hz monitors or 3 monitor gaming. Otherwise, you are much better off with 1 GPU. Less power, less heat, and less $$$.

If your GPU starts to feel weak, then sell it and get a better one.

Not entirely true. I use two 760s on a single 60Hz 1080p monitor, simply because then I can run everything at max. The price to performance of two cards vs one is simply awesome. In my case, I get more performance than a £900 Titan with 2x £200 cards.

Having 2 cards has it's advantages and disadvantages. It's about whether you think whatever disadvantages can appear outweigh the advantages of blistering speed.

His reply is a bit not valid. Here's some thought.

A single Titan that cost more than 2 760. Your performance yield only reaches a 780 perhaps slightly tiny bit faster than 780. Note that a 780 is slightly faster than a Titan.

In sg a gtx760 would cost around $330-$370 range. 2 of it $660-$740. That's already exceeded the cost of a single gtx780.

Not unless one has a specific reason why he needs the Titan, else on gaming performance, a 780 and titan is of no differences.

That does not includes if one does not have a z77/87/97 sli capable board and more psu wattage included.

Now take into consideration of either dual r9 280 and dual gtx960. Dual 960 is really out of the question as the price of it is ridiculous. 2 of that card can almost land you a gtx980.

Let's take a closer look on dual 280 instead. If one uses a dual 280, let's say sapphire brand at $285 each. That will cost $570. And yet it yields to just a single 290x with tiny bit faster for a dual 280. You are still better off buying a single 290x Lightning or sapphire triX. Cheaper and higher binned.

The performance for dual cards and pricing add up in mid tier gpu isn't worth it to begin with. Usually the best to go dual gpu right now is either a dual r9 290 dual 970 onwards.

valid points. dual 290 may be cheaper than the next amd top card. imo, CF is worth it for ppl who have an existing card, with supporting psu and mobo and don't wish to buy another high end card. performance gains seem to be there but also dependent on the usage, as mentioned by the 1st comment.

i may give it a try in the future, not for performance, just for fun to see how it goes. as amd cards are cheaper, it's probably an easier path to take.
