Can I check with you guys one thing? Do you folks line up the parts nicely (ie don't block one another) and mass top coat them together or apply top coat piece by piece?

there are many approach to top coating. as im lazy, i tend to build finish then split the kit into segments (eg. hands, legs etc.) and topcoat.

using too much thinner will soften your plastics and cause them to have stress marks easily.. paints from mr hobby and tamiya dun contain thinner, you got to thin them yourself

Planning to do painting for the first time.. Hence I have quite a bit of questions.do bear with me
Since they come without thinner, can I apply them straight out of bottle?

for the popular brands like Gaia Note, Tamiya and Mr Hobby, u need to thin them first before using. it is too thick to be used directly.

Is this still an ongoing thing? I'm still having extreme difficulties with basic panel lining

yes, it is an ongoing thing.

dry brushing? dry brushing is advance technique for doing weathering effects. i not very familiar with dry brushing

yes, dilute the paint more and do many thin layers

Really depends on your preference on painting. For me I prime,paint,dry brush. Ensure the surface you dry brush is totally dry.

You need to thin the paint first unless u using the dry tamiya weathering pallette. For me I use a mid size brush (don't use big brush, cover small area and brush more often to avoid over doing it) and paint, so I need to ensure I get rid of the excess paint on a surface first. Once u confirm that u your brush is not too wet you can start to dry paint. Use the top of your hand to test, if it feels wet means u need to further dry it.

Use the useless plastic that holds your gundam parts to test or learn how to dry brush. That is how I learn. Watch YouTube videos too it really helps.
Do it more often u learn your own style too.

Don't need to be guru, a lot of people done it before us already.

However if you know how to do highlighting then you will be a guru. Your model will be able to stand out really well.

use the alcohol u find in pharmacy stores or u can use bleach which is stronger. i've used both on kits that i've painted close to 10 years ago.

Acrylics paints are excellent for this
Brands like Tamiya, Mr Hobby Aqueous, Vallejo, AK interactive.
All can be thinned down with either water or acrylic thinner.
Brushes also plays a part in hand painting.
There are synthetic brushes, natural hair brushes and hybrids.
Art friends do sells them, you can get cheap sable brushes there.

There are many videos on youtube that can help you.
As this is an extensive subject, you can do a search for Warhammer miniature hobby painting on youtube or google.
The techniques used are similar.

As for the guy with panel line issues, care to explain the type of panel line material used?
Micro pen? Tamiya panel accent?
for basics, micro pen can go all over anything and can be cleaned up with a hard rubber/eraser.
For tamiya panel accent, it is enamel based.
It is better for you to gloss the surface so the liquid flows better. It can be cleaned up using enamel thinner, zippo liquid or Isopropyl alcohol.
Then decal up and finish up with the top coat of your desire.

Used pencil to lightly line the panel n all the bends.for me,I prefer this approach as the line is not too defined
