Think its a matter of perspective. Generally in many a story. 道 and 魔 are about the same. End of they day its their self interest that matter. Both got do good and bad also. Just how much of these they do that differentiate them more. The good do bad they are 魔. The bad do good maybe people will see them as saint.

Also, difference is the side they choose to present to others. Those on the good side, they need show the world they are good. Let the world see them doing good. Thus they will limit themselves from doing bad, and do more good, they have bottomline. They might not do good out of sincerity, just an act to keep up the image. But when compare to those who are seen to do more bad, they are consider good.

For those who choose to do bad. They no need hide behind the good facade. They just outright do it. Since the world already know who they are. They got not much inhibition and bottomline when come to doing bad. Want do it just do it. Not that they don't do good. Just not as much as they don't need to act.

Also, those that do good often behind will engage someone else to be their 黑手套. There are some things they cannot be seen doing, especially the bad things, if they want to keep their good image. Thus, they will secretly have others do the dirty job for them.
