H77 board, max HDD size?

Hey guys,

I've an old H77 board (MSI H77MA-G43) with an Ivy Bridge i5, running on Win 7 SP1 x64.

Just wondering if this board can support those 8TB hard disks?

I have a 3TB onboard already, running on GPT. Just wondering if there's a max size HDD this board can take? I know some NAS or USB hdd boxes can only take 3TB HDD max. Not sure if a mobo has the same limitation.

for non-os drive, i not heard of hdd size limit for modern mb & os
as long as can format as gpt drive, i think urs can support - but juz tat i not expert

Thanks bros. I've actually posted a qn on MSI forums. Still waiting for replies. I don't see any new BIOS updates since Sep 2013 for this board.

That's why very skeptical.


@hlots123 : Yeah. I have a 3TB onboard right now on GPT. So I was thinking maybe HDD size limit is a function of the OS rather than the BIOS or board.... but, similarly, not an expert too. So I can't be sure.

Please connect the drive to an Intel SATA port (AHCI) and not 3rd party SATA controller port (if any).

my qns is, are 4k sector drives w/o 512 emulation "commonly sold" nowadays? and can windows 7 sp1 support?

btw i believe 32bit os can support >2.2tb too, as long as data drive not os drive (and with modern os & mb)

UEFI only necessary for boot drive. If use as secondary storage BIOS also can. When I had AMD 760G chipset from 2009, I could use a 4TB hard drive.
