Hello. Planning to try to make a day or 2 free to go down to Hakone in December 16/17.

How should I plan it? I read so much about the Hakone free pass. Does it cover all the transportation for free? 1D seems a bit rush... planning maybe stay 1N in one of those onsen rooms and relax for the night but the one I saw was 600+ per night! maybe got cheaper la will search somemore. lol.

I was reading this

https://www.odakyu.jp/english/sightseeing/itineraries/hakone-1-day/

but I am probably not so interested in the open air museum..If I do plan 2 days there any recommendations?

If I buy the Hakone Free pass, 1 way to Hakone by the romancecar is additional 1090 yen. Coming back from Hakone I top up another 1090 yen?

I'd recommend 2D1N so can stay overnight at a ryokan. The pass will cover all unlimited transportation within Hakone including bus, pirate ship and cable car. I think there are plenty of ryokans to choose from depending on your budget.

thanks. What are some restrictions on the pass ah? or like, what are some things i must take note of? I noticed there's also a fuji hakone pass on top of the hakone free pass.

I assume from Hakone to the premium outlet, the Hakone Free pass doesn't cover it? Since premium outlet seems quite far from the Hakone main area.

Covered. I took the bus from togendai to gotemba station and there is a free shuttle bus to the outlet from there.

Need to take note that Hakone has a bus going to Izu prefecture. That bus is not covered in the hakone free pass. It is quite difficult to differentiate since the central hosts a lot of bus numbers. Just take note of what bus number u need to take to each location and use those only. Ignore the rest.

Worth to stay a night to soak up the onsen and have dinner there.

From Hakone to Gotemba outlet, the bus is covered but if you intend to return back to Tokyo from there by bus, this is not covered. But you don't have to pay the full return fare, just show the pass to the bus driver and he will calculate the top-up needed. I took this route last time as I didn't want the hassle of changing train lines on the way back. This was easily 8-10 years ago so the rules might have changed now.

This is my initial itinerary for Mt Fuji going to hakone. Pretty sure you can cover all in a day if u leave tokyo very early. Note that i started from Kawaguchiko and enter Hakone, so my starting point was togendai rather than hakone yumoto. But if you are coming from tokyo, use the reverse for my Day 7 and you can continue after togendai to moto hakone via the lake cruise. Then take bus express R (30mins) back to yumoto. This path has some very nice scenary of mountain slopes and sea. If next day got some time, can head to mishima skywalk, wun regret de.

Day 7 - Thurs:
Togendai - Owakudani - Souzan - Gora - hakone yumoto - Hakone hotel for dinner and retire for the night

Day 8 - Fri:
Breakfast at hotel
Express R bus from hakone yumoto - Moto hakone. Walk around this area towards the shrine and tori gate
Take the Lake Aishii cruise roundabout and drop off at hakonemachi (50-60 mins)
Take bus N to Mishima skywalk, 7 stops
Back to Shinjuku via romancecar

Skywalk is good only if the weather is cloudless and good. Been there at 9.30am with the good view when it opened and 10am it was swarmed by tour groups with no view of Mt. Fuji. :s13:

Lol ok la, for me, it was partially blocked, and no tour grps, only about 20-30 tourists nia. Since bus to there is free, entry cost 1000yen nia, mgiht as well go enjoy before heading back to tokyo.

sorry to hijack thread but i really dont want to create another thread on Hakone

Im from tokyo and will be going to Gotemba Premium outlet on 21/11 and then i thought of going to Hakone on 22/11. my current plan is to go back to Tokyo after each trip, but issit better to stay over at hakone to have a more relaxed journey and combine two daytrips into a 2D1N affair? I will be on JR pass so will not pursue the Hakone pass.

Yea, mine was free too, since I got the Fuji Area pass. Chop chop go early to see Mt. Fuji without the crowds.

Ideally 1 night in Hakone is better and more convenient not so rushing.

Budden why are u on jr pass during this 2 days, JR Pass takes u to Odawara Station, from there everything would be additional cost on ur own liao. the 2 days pass will be more value for money.

Like what was mention above. JR pass doesnt cover u after Odawara. You need the hakone freepass for travelling around Hakone..

Thanks both. Ok so I will sacrifice one of my nights in Tokyo to spend a night in Hakone. Do you guys have any ryokan to recommend? would like one with private onsen.

I'll be using JR Pass because the nights before I will be from Sapporo then Hakodate then Tokyo, but thanks for your concerns :) I dont really mind the extra cost within Hakone, I've checked them and its cheap after Odawara station so I won't proceed with the Hakone pass

If you're not planning to take all the modes of transport in hakone, then the pass may not be worthwhile, i assume you have worked out the sums. Though it is usually worthwhile for most ppl.

hmmmm.. Im interested to know if my calculations are right;

Im interested in going to Hakone Open Air Museum, the famous torii gate / lake ashi, Ancient Cedar Ave, Owakudani and Odawara castle. issit still worthwhile to get the pass?
