Hi could anyone share your experience of Hakone? Is it very cold in December? Anyone try the out door hot spring? Would it be terrible cold when you leave the water and expose to the cold air.

I am staying 1 night on 10 Dec. Currently lowest temperature expose to is 7-8 deg C. (Struggling to dry myself after a hot shower if the room do not have heater)

It won't be that cold. When you stand up after soaking 10 mins in that steaming onsen, your body will be so hot it won't feel the cold at all.

The colder the weather, the better the experience for outdoor onsen

Face is cold while body is warm :)

2 winters ago at Nagano ken, my friend and 1 were standing bare naked outside the outdoor onsen pool which was just beside a flowing river admiring at the beautiful white scenery while it was snowing heavily around us. We climbed out of the onsen pool and stood on the huge rocks next to the flowing river. I dare say we were out for about half a minute or more.

I visited Hakone in Jan this year. The temp was around 2°-10°. It was a great experience for outdoor onsen. The floor was cold the first time I step on it. After rinsing myself with warm water, I dipped into the onsen and it was heaven. No doubt it is cold whenever you need to head out to cool off but it is not unbearable. I enjoyed it very much and it is really a great experience.
