Hi everyone,
I've narrowed down to these 3 places for short trips out of tokyo and have some enquiries.

1. if it were u, which 2 out of 3 wld you choose and y?

2. can these places be covered on a day trip individually? or need to stay overnight?

If I were you. I will choose Hakone and Kamakura. Firstly is because this 2 places are along the same route on the Odakyu Line (Don't have to spend too much time travelling from one place to another). I think you can also consider getting the Hakone Kamakura Pass to save on some transportation cost (Transportation around Hakone, in particular, tends to be expensive)

For me I think it does not make sense to go this 2 places individually from Tokyo since they are along the same route. So I would probably link them together. And maybe stay a night at both or either of this places depending on how you plan the route.

for hakone, an overnight stay is a better choice. I have done kamakura on a day trip but from Yokohama, Nikko yes too.. but expect to return back at night.

Hi, I just returned from Japan in Feb.
I went to Hakone and Nikko.
They are both lovely and I will be going to these 2 places again with another group of people very soon!

I would also be visiting Kawagoe this time.

Hakone - can definitely cover in 1 day.
You buy the Hakone free pass and the rides there are all included, so u follow the itinerary of the provided rides.
You may wanna top up a bit more and ride on the Romance car which is direct ride.

Nikko- basically the Kegon side which includes Lake Chuzenji in Oku Nikko (Inner Nikko) you can cover in 1 day (Better to purchase the All area pass, so that you can visit more places).

If you wanna visit the Kinu onsen side which includes the theme parks, then you would need another day.

You may wanna top up the fare and ride on the Spacio train which brings u directly to Nikko.

Hakone can be covered in one day. If you do a day trip here, suggest to be early to start your day so that you can enjoy the scenery at each stop.

And not a touch-and-go kind.

It's possible to do day trip to Hakone but still advice you to stay a night there.
Some of the transportation like buses, and cruise ship follow a schedule and you might need to queue for them. And also you might want to stop for some time at each spot. And for some places like the Hakone Shrine. You need to walk there so that will also take up some time.

Yes, I really enjoyed Nikko in Feb.
Although it was cold, the skies were clear.
However as it was still winter, not all the attractions were opened.

I just came back from Japan trip in June.
This time the trip to Nikko was ruined by fog! :(

Visibility was so poor!

Lesson learnt- don't visit Nikko during the rainy season (ie June and maybe early July).
Nothing can be seen.
Visibility is only a few metres.
The tourist spots are not opened during the fog as it is no point paying to get in there.
