Hard Disk Failure?

Hello,

My HDD seems to have failed. When I plug it into computers, it only shows up as external drive D:. Is there any way to save it?

If not, do I need to use a data recovery service? How much is that going to cost?

Which brand of harddisk is this, is it one of those external ones?

Anyway your best bet is to
- As much as possible try not to move the drive at all, if its a mechanical damage any movement will further degrade the drive. (I.e try to keep the drive in situ as much as possible
- Data recovery if the drive is still functional is no different then getting a recovery software and trying to recover it yourself, the company might have more hardware to place the drive into for extraction but the approach is quite similar
- In a situation where the mechanical parts are damages the cost from what I know is not economically viable (unless you have some million dollar work stuff on it)

Those external type drives are usually stuffed with crappy harddrives and do suffer wear and tear much easier (hence they're so cheap). The 2.5 inch ones are more durable as they are designed to be moved around.

Also if it appears on the computer as D there is still some hope, I would get a good recovery software and try to extract it. Do also note the earlier advise about the noise from the drive.

It's a WD external hard disk.

I also have an old HP hard disk that makes sounds when i plug it in, and has very slow write speeds.
The slow speed makes it impossible to copy out most of the data inside, however i believe i have managed to copy out most of the important ones from it (some might be lost I fear).

For this one, I suppose data recovery is the only way?

Also, teach me the best way to to back up my personal data. Please don't recommend a 3-2-1 system or whatever because I'm too cheap and lazy to have so many backups...

Hrmm

WD or Seagate external drives are known to give issues after awhile, for your situation I would attempt the data myself (use a spare laptop and just run the recovery software which might take a few days assuming the drive works okay without weird scratchy noises.

For backup its hard to say pending on your data storage, if small just go cloud solutions or get a reputable SSD and stuff the data.

Or if larger capacity you can get a 2 bay USB enclosure and run a Raid 1, This way if one HDD goes down you have the other as a backup. As a Raid 1 the data will copy to 2 drives at once when used.

If getting external drives, please avoid WD unless you are fully aware of the consequences of the onboard hardware disk encryption.

I have been using a number of Seagate drives and to date all have worked fine for me. But many will disagree with me LOL.

I agree with you. So far those Seagate drives I had are very stable. I bought a 500gb one from TB for torrenting, expecting it to die off after 1-2 years of usage. Now into the 3rd year still running well.

My other drives are also Seagate. All served me well.
