Harddrive transfer speed goes to zero

Have a WD mypassport usb 3.0 with files inside, and when I want to transfer it to my desktop it will start at 80mb/s then go down to zero, how can I get the files without formatting/losing the files?

The drive is failing.

Happened to me before. Get what you can onto another disk first. What I did was to avoid the files that kept going to 0. After you saved what you can, depending on how important the rest of the files are, you can consider data recovery, either DIY (I had decent luck with ddrescue on linux, but even then it's not 100%) or professional (fairly expensive).

you can use crystaldiskinfo to confirm status of hdd.
as mentioned earlier, transfer other files first, leaving those that have issue transferring to the last.
use chkdsk /r in cmd prompt to try repair.
if in luck, should be able to recover the file after the repair.

Must the WD red, last time repairing my mac in SLS, people come into the shop asking for recovery... own one and vibration is crazy when reading, shows that the dampening is bad or the design flaw of the disks, off-centre alignment.

The more you spin the disk the more it rocks, the more scratches it creates on the read surface and ultimately the whole drive will be gone.

Make sure your disk is format to NTFS if you want to transfer large file.

Managed to retrieve all my data and then use chkdsk to format, so how can I determine if the drive can still be used or time to throw? IIRC this external drive is about 8 years old model already

Download and use HDTune to scan for bad sectors. Do not tick Quick Scan.

Just finished the scan and the damaged blocks is 0.4% , is this a lot and should I still use the drive?

You could try repair bad sector by low format the hard disk. Don't disturb during low level process it caused hard disk failed.
