Anyone here have any real-life experience in sizing and/or administering a production Hadoop cluster?

Need some advice with starting up a small hadoop cluster.

Nope I am not Hadoop expert. Why don't you try things out if you are doing a POC? Guess no one will exactly know your workload and hence your requirement and also your budget. Try the AWS EMR if you are interested

quite easy to install using cloudera manager. much easier than oracle rac.
everything is GUI driven. and it gives you choice to install variety of combo; hdfs, pig, hive, hbase, mahout, etc...
i did it on my oracle virtualbox with 4 linux vm.
