Hardware HEVC video encoding

For those with nvidia cards (Kepler 6xx series onwards), you can use your graphics card to encode video! The latest Pascal 10xx series supports 10bit hevc encoding. The advantage is that 1080p videos are converted at more than 130 fps instead of 20 using similar handbrake settings. 4k videos can be encoded at more than 30 fps instead of seconds per frame when using an i7 CPU.

A program with many options is Staxrip

1) Download Staxrip and unzip anywhere

2) Download NVEnc and replace the files of staxrip inside staxrip\Apps\NVEncC

3) When you run Staxrip for the first time, select the same folder path to save settings, then click AviSynth+ to install

4) On the right side, the default x264 profile is loaded, click on that and select nvidia h265. Then click Encoder options in the box.

5) Under Basic, In CQP mode, there is constant QP I, P and B. If all is 18 it is very close to original but file size is huge. I is least compressible, followed by P and B is most compressible. Default option gives you about 67% original file size. You can increase to any values you want. For me, I chose 23, 26, 30. This gives me 47% of file size.

6) Under slice decision, for B frame choose 9 (higher is better) and Ref frames choose 16. Under Rate control tick Adaptive Quantization. This improves minor details by giving more bits to complex areas.

7) Under Other tab, select Cabac which has higher compression, but requires higher cpu to decode your video. Change Max CU to 32 and Min to 8. higher max CU gives more compression, but you lose small details in the video.

Under custom add this:--output-depth 10
10bit gives even higher quality for the same file size. however older devices may not support, or lag due to higher cpu req to decode.

You can now save settings by pressing down button beside OK

8) Go back main page and adjust audio. I chose vorbis because of its good quality for low bit rates (115kbps). Press Next to encode

Your GPU will now jump from 150Mhz idle to the max speed, Video Engine Load goes up... and your CPU usage goes up.

This is the end result comparison. Anime is used for illustration because it is harder to encode compared to live action videos. As long as the outlines are clear in high action scenes, the settings are perfect.

Now you dont have to leave your computer overnight to convert many videos! Consumer nvidia cards supports 2 simultaneous conversion, so you can save even more time.
