Guys I'm really at my wit's end over here. For the past few days(or weeks) I've taken up upon myself to fix what's ailing my parent's PC. Basically when I turn it on, the com would start, fans would spin for maybe 2 seconds then everything shuts off, auto-repeat.

My first thought was that its probably PSU problem, so I borrowed another PSU and a stick of ram. Tried replacing both the memory and PSU but no luck, still same problem. Then I did the paper clip test on my PSU and it passed.

So I concluded it was probably the motherboard. Took a few days break before I managed to procure a motherboard and cpu. Now the friggin thing starts, fan stops spinning, my monitor still shows the mobo startup page and post then it goes into black screen with _ blinking on the top left corner. Only then the fans started spinning again and doesn't stop this time. Anything(keyboard mouse etc) I connect to the motherboard doesnt work, I tried both usb and ps/2 keyboards...

I have no idea what is going on anymore, is the 'new' motherboard having its own set of problems? Or is it my PSU despite it passing the paper clip test?

Oh btw in case anyone is wondering why I'm not using my own PC to troubleshoot, the rig you see on the right is no longer mine.

You mix and match different motherboard and expect windows to load.

Reinstall la

TS, you write a lot of the problem, but nothing about the age and brand/model of the component involved in the fail to start rig.

My parent's pc is asrock b75m dgs with intel g2030, adata 4gb ram, fsp aurum 500w.

the replacement cpu and mobo is a 4-5 yr old gigabyte ma770T-ud3p with amd athlon x2 250.

You should have replaced both motherboard and PSU. Try borrowing the PSU again on new motherboard

i know i should have... it was a hindsight, I just didnt expect both to fail, its not easy finding ppl to borrow PSU now...

Would be great if anyone who's well verse in computer problems can tell from the symptoms what are the problems so I could save making another trip to borrow a PSU again

Before installing into your parent desktop, is this gigabyte ma770T-ud3p with amd athlon x2 250 able to boot to desktop?

It's not that difficult to figure out. You have replaced the MB, CPU, RAM and PSU but the problem persist. That points to the GPU as the likely culprit.

Try running with integrated graphics or another GPU.

Later TS finds out actually his PSU, AMD CPU, RAM and Gigabyte mobo all no problem, but the frigging GPU is the cause of all problem. He will go bang wall. :s22:

That leaves the hard disk. If you have an old hard disk lying around and a Windows installation disk, you can try reinstalling Windows.

Have you tried the following ?

1) Reset CMOS
2) Try all the RAM slots
3) Connect your HDD to a different SATA power connector on your PSU

In my experience one of the SATA power connectors can be faulty and the PSU will still pass the paper clip test - that was the case for my old Shuttle rig (for some reason 1 out of the 4 SATA connectors wasn't working).
