Hi,

I am on Windows 8.1 and recently my computer hung and I had to do a hard reset.

When the pc came back alive, I realised that my Windows was not activated and my Microsoft office programs cannot be open. I am also unable to do any Microsoft updates. An error message "Microsoft Office is unable to find the license for this application. An attempt to repair was unsuccessful or cancelled. Application will exit" popped out.

After doing some google searches, I realised the problem has to do with this file SPPSVC.exe which is the Software Protection System in services.msc which is not started. I am having no luck enabling it or getting it to start. Anyone have any ideas how?

I don't really want to re-install windows unless I have no choice.

How was MS Office installed on the computer? Was it downloaded and installed from the Office.com site or installed using an installation disc?

installed with installation disc, it was working fine until that hard reboot and now it can't work.

You may wanna try this :

Option 1
1. Run the office key remover from here : pXc-coding » Office Key Remover
2. Run the small program, choose remove the product key for your version off office.
3.Go to the control panel, choose add/remove programs (or equivalent for your version of windows)
- Highlight Microsoft Office, choose CHANGE, choose Enter product Key, enter your product key

Option 2
1. Open command prompt with "Run as Administrator"

2. Run the following command :
cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

3. Run the following command :
cscript ospp.vbs /act

NOTE : In one instance, the script "ospp.vbs wasn't in teh directory, I just copied from the other system)

4. Reopen any Office. No more errors.

ya, pretty much decided on re-installing my windows, just need to backup whatever files (going to do a repair install) and then reinstall it.
