some people just dont get it. Everyone would want to start work during the "prime" hrs, that is from 8 am to 9.30 am. During this time the roads will be over crowded. Nobody will want to start work during crazy hrs. it is during crazy hrs that the roads are empty.

Also as a business owner, i will want my company to operate during office hours, not during crazy hours. How am i going to contact my customers, suppliers if my office functions when everyone else is sleeping?

There are so many ways around this.. and by different timing i don think he means crazy hours, something like 7am, 8am 9 am 10am would already help a lot. Its the same concept as how certain coys allow their employees to have flexible lunch schedule as long as they adhere to the timing (say 1 hr)

But still will be a bit crowded because the root of the problem is still overpopulation and influx of FT

there is almost no way around this. otherwise, the off-peak free mrt ride will be super crowded already.

also no bosses will want they company to start at 10 when all the rest starts at least an hour earlier. They will want to sync their operations with others.

if you are thinking that the roads are clear at around 7 am, think again. many parents send their kids to school around this time.

also if flexible lunch is so successful, why is it that the canteens and hawker centres are so crowded at 12 pm? because this is time we have lunch. you go ahead and have your lunch at 3 pm, most people will want to have it at 11.30 to 1 pm

Thats why the govt has been trying to encourage and push flexible work schedule or to allow employees to work from home during certain days.. but so far it is not that successful yet

This is the way forward if singapore is going to push for a 10m population

Actually i post a solution last year for this type of problem. The time difference is not too big because sg is small.

The problem with traffic jam is everybody starts work aro the same time.

Ok, here's my idea of how to cut the traffic jam to CBD by 75%. Don't know if it will work but let's try.

If you see the map split into 3 zone inside CBD. If each zone start work at different time.

Office inside Red Zone starts work: 7:45am(40%) or 8:15am (40%)
20% can choose to opt out.

Office inside Blue Zone starts work: 8:00am(40%) or 8:30am (40%)
20% can choose to opt out.

Office inside Yellow Zone starts work: 8:15am(40%) - 8:45am (40%)
20% can choose to opt out.

Those that start work early also knock off early. :D

Here in sg.. we don't need any ERP in the sky. :s22:

i already whatever it is, it will not work. most companies will want to choose the prime hours and leave the lousy hours to the rest.

also imagine 40% of the people arriving at the same time at around the same place. it will really crowd out the whole area.

all the major cities in the world face traffic problem. if it can be solve, i am sure the leaders of the countries would have done it.

in sg, even during off peak hours, our expressway is also jammed up.

the 1 hr spread you suggested is definitely not enough. our peak period in sg is from 6.30 to 9 am as quoted by LTA. during this time any major roads in sg would be facing heavy traffic. if you want to improve the situation, you will have to increase the spread by at least 1.5 hrs on each side.

in fact, most companies already start during the time that you have stated.

also most people working in the cbd uses public transport. it does not contribute much to jams.

what about areas other than the cbd? how are you going to plan for all. Almost every part of singapore experience some sort of jam during the peak hours.

You can still go to work early even though the official work hours are later. Many parents who send their children to school proceed on to their workplace.

You can have a leisurely breakfast with other colleagues who also send their children, or play on-line games because 7.30am SG time is 7.30pm US time so that's 'prime' online gaming time, I hear even got someone go to office early to build Gundam kit...

of course, you can do anything you want. but the problem is how many people are doing it? Just you and a few parents doing it is not going to work. Otherwise our roads will not be so jammed up during the peak hours.

you mentioned that flexible lunch can help to reduce the crowd.

on sundays, lunch/dinner is most flexible. Can you tell me at what time are the food courts and hawker centres are very crowded.

These habits just cannot change that easily.

All I know is that when I go for lunch at 11am + or after 2pm + on weekdays in CBD areas or any other areas in SG, I'm a happy man as compared to if I had went for lunch between 12pm to 1pm

Believe what you want to believe, and I will believe mine

You are contradicting yourself by saying that statement. That statement seems to show that a part of you believe that it is possible to reduce the crowd if people are more flexible.

Of course people aren't going to change their habits without any push. An example would be the free MRT ride before 7.45am and 50 cents discount between 7.45-8pm. No one in their right mind would be willing to go to office 1 hour earlier plus and still only be able to leave work the same as other people without any benefits.. but at least with that incentive, more people are willing to do so.

I dun understand this statement. Now its like 80% or more(9am - 930am start work) of people arriving at the same time at around the same place, and you are complaining about only 40% ?

For weekdays, those that start work early can have lunch early.

As for Sat and Sun, it's out of anyone's control. Those who don't like to wait like me, I usually go early.. first few customer to be seated. If the queue is long, make sure you book a table before you go there next time.

It's easy.. those town outside the cbd, just draw those 3 color zone where the the ones in the middle start work first.

If 40% in a single time is huge, can split it into another 2 timing.. each only 20%.

Then we don't need COE or ERP to control the traffic. Maybe only for weekends in the CBD area.

Office inside Red Zone starts work:
7:45am(20%) / 8:00am(20%)
or 8:15am (20%) / 8:30am(20%)

20% can choose to opt out.

Office inside Blue Zone starts work:
8:00am(20%) / 8:15am(20%)
or 8:30am(20%) / 8:45am(20%)

20% can choose to opt out.

Office inside Yellow Zone starts work:
8:15am(20%) / 8:30am(20%)
or 8:45am(20%) / 9:00am(20%)

20% can choose to opt out.

I do not see any improvement if the time only range from from 7.45am vs 8.30am.This will not work as the timings are too close to make any difference.

The spread should be larger, say 7.00am to 10:30am and if possible, if people want to work night shift, allow them. Assume 20% opt for night shift, eg from 1pm to 9pm, you can immediately see 20% crowd dissappear from morning rush.

i believe you. but how people would like to have lunch at the hours that you have stated?

it is not about you or me. yes, we can beat the crowd with your strategies. now is the about the behavior of the masses.

No, most people are not flexible.
