My hdd. It's a Enterprise hdd, so it's more exp than the regular hdd. But it fails after 3 yrs... got 5 yrs warranty though

claim warranty, at the same time, check with manufacturer on data recovery charges

I dunno how to help, but just take this chance to remind everyone to backup anything impt. One copy is way too risky. At the very least, using a cloud service like backblaze is relatively cheap 'insurance' @ US$5/mth.

i did contact them b4. but depends on the drive and the size, can be as high as 2k.

I have a less-than-2 yrs old WD 1TB Caviar Black that died. I know it is really dead because I took it to 4 pc repair shops at Sim Lim Sq and they all gave me the same conclusion.........hardware failure and only a pro lab can help. The official data recovery partner for WD in Singapore is Ontrack. WD will honour the warranty if the hdd is opened by Ontrack, whether or not data is salvagable. However, Ontrack charges $2000 and upwards, depending on condition of the hdd. There are other companies that do data recovery and the cheapest quote I got was $800.

Can anyone recommend a cheaper data recovery service? $800 is still a lot of money. $300-400 is more affordable for me considering I have to buy a new hdd since the WD warranty will be void if it was opened by someone other than Ontrack.

I am guessing you are probably thinking I should have backed up. I did until a few months ago. I didn't expect the drive to die so soon. I have had drives died on me before but usually after 3 yrs of use. Moreover, the problems are usually boot sector problem, which are relatively easy to fix. While doing research on data recovery services, I found out that there are some real issues with WD drives. Go to Western Digital WD WD1001FALS Data Recovery - Datacent and read about it. So my advice for those of you who have WD drives, back up and back up now!

Seems like what electrica posted is true.

My western digital black just died yesterday. All my school work are inside and my fyp that is due soon is inside. Maybe I'll stop using western digital for a while. Just being superstitious

1- Got normal hdd reading sounds, but they are slower.

2- unable to read the contents in the hdd. Win 10 takes a long time to read the hdd, but it says need to format.

3- I am trying to use RecoveRX from Transcend, it is now not responding.

You should not do anything to it and send it for data recovery. Else you may loss all your important data.

Warranty only grant you harddisk repair but not data recovery.
Harddisk is not expensive now a day, not sure why many user still do not have habit to do backup regularly.

Ontrack said for 1TB HDD, the price is above $1K. I went to Accplus instead and Louis is helping me to recover my data. Some data are in bad sectors and he is able to adjust the speed to slower and the data is recovered! Takes more time but the data is retrievable!
