Hi all.

Im planning to get a swiss watch for dowry this year end. Its gonna be my first time and im torn between Omega and Tudor.

For Omega watch, im eyeing on Omega Seamaster 300m 2018. Retail is selling at $5,700 but i saw someone selling for $3,900 but the date of purchase will be backdated a few days. Issit safe to buy from non-boutique watch shop that sells ‘brand new’ watch?

For Tudor, im eyeing on Tudor Black Bay.
Im also open to Tag Heuer Aquaracer.

Can anyone share some experiences and advices with me? Im really noob. I hope i can get some good responses from this.

buying omega from grey dealer could save you some money for your wedding day. warranty is international, so no worry.

In short, it is safe as long it is a reputable shop.

To go into the topic a bit more:
I recommend you to google grey dealer and you will then know how they work and why they can sell a watch at 30% discount.

Successful grey dealers get good discounts from authorised dealers as they are frequent customers and they help authorised dealers move their inventory. In addition, usually the watches are sourced overseas which means no GST/VAT is paid which again lower the cost of the watch.

If you go into a boutique and the AD can give you a 10% off, a grey dealer can definitely get more discounts (say 20-25%). Plus they claim back GST so their cost is like 27-33% off RRP. This is true for most brand excluding rolex / PP and you will can save up to 1-2k.

Watches generally have international warranty, if the watch is properly dated with an AD seller - there should be no issue at all. Only thing is that it may be named under another person and not yours.

On your choice:

You can refer to this website. www.kame-kichi.com this is a reputable grey dealer in Japan who i think is competitive in pricing for Omega and Tudor. You can use the price there as an indicator (price in website less 8% VAT) to sense check the grey dealer price. I bought a few watches from them already.

Your shortlisted watch is sold there as well and it will cost you $3.5k (if you happen to go Tokyo). So assume the dealer in SG go there and buy the watch and sell you for $3.9k, its also a good 10% return for him and its pretty legitimate. But do note that this is not the 2018 version, the date for 2018 is at 6 oclock.

I just came back from malaysia and checked the AD store there... they are selling at $4.2k for Omega Seamaster 300m 2018. Question is, if i were to buy in malaysia, is the warranty valid to use in singapore? If yes, usually whats the ‘normal’ warranty duration? 5 years? 10 years?

May i also know how to physically check the authenticity of the watch besides the logo and the dial movement?

In short, it is safe as long it is a reputable shop.

Warranty is international one. Omega i think is 2 years. 5 years is for Rolex and AP (i think boutique pieces). Checking authenticity is depending on model, unfortunately for omega - I'm not sure. I remember for omega there is a authentication stamp at the back of the watch which is stamped by laser, this should be clear n precise. There is also an omega sign engrave in the middle of the glass where centre of the hands are.

You should also check the box, warranty card and serial matches. Personally, i feel this is important even though you are buying the watch and not the box. The box should be made of very high grade materials (think LV, prada).

Fakes are selling like few hundred dollars usually don't come with the upfront cost and workmanship to make exact replica of the quality boxes. And Papers are important because you then know where the watch comes from.

I can sense that you are very excited but yet nervous over it. Buy watch should be enjoying one so i recommend you just get from AD, reputable grey dealers like Chuan Watch / KB luxury if they have your model on sale. Dont think too much especially this pieee has significant sentimental value for you.

This is a poisonous hobby, you wont stop at 1 watch ahahah. My first was a piece from Hourglass which I kept, while my other pieces that I'm stlll keeping are either from AD / Kame. Many other watches that I bought pre-owned came and go.

Lastly, if i can convince you - why don't you go for a Rolex. It has very strong value retention. Get a sports model (yes its going to be selling above retail) but i guarantee you that the watch can be pass to your child as his/her dowry 30 years later.

Less than sgd4k when i bought it two years ago from the popular tudor/rolex boutique shop KHH at chinatown but its not in-house movement, only an ETA. Now u can try resale market maybe can get cheaper.

Else get tag aquaracer also ok since you are on a budget. I think $3k can get?
