[Help] Budget NAS build.

I'm hoping those more informed can look over my tentative part choices and let me know if there are any alternatives that might be cheaper, better OR in some cases simply available locally.

MB/CPU: ASRock J3455-ITX Mini ITX (Newegg. $106 + $30 shipping)

Case Option #1: LIAN LI PC-Q25B (Newegg. $150 + $48 shipping)
Case Option #2: Generic TaoBao case ($72 + $?? shipping)

PSU: Considering PicoPSU but I'm not sure how much power I need OR what to do with the gaping hole that would be left in the back of the case. Also, local seller that I saw a few months back seems to have disappeared.

RAM: Any non-ECC RAM you guys recommend.

Sorry not familiar to DIY Nas, but asking how many Disk are u running and is it with the mobo onboard raid or u getting a pcie raid card?

Regarding the case, do you really need hot swappable bays? Personally for me, I dont see myself switching in and out drives that frequent, so a normal case would be fine for me. The Taobao case seems good for airflow/drive placement, but have you considered normal cases?

Yep. Still hanging in there.

Nope. Not considered normal case yet. The ones that I've come across that hold 6-bays are quite large. Then again, I'm open to suggestions. Kinda why I'm here.

TaoBao case is a total mystery to me. Not sure what the build quality is like. Again, hoping someone here has actually given it a try.

Under real world testing, still hitting 30W power consumption

I chose this case because it was a case built for NAS purposes
8x HDD Aluminium Case

File Transfer Speeds as per normal as if it is a local drive

I didn't go for G series Proc due to the power Draw.

NAS will be good for local File Transfers

J3455, Avertek does not carry it. Been down that route. You have to get it outside.
I got mine from Taobao for around $120. You can get it wherever you can find it. If spoil, just buy another one as it is cheap anough.

Lian Li case i got Infinity@SLS to do a custom order. around $169+/- i got it a few years ago so at that time, lazada / qoo was not very popular

Ram, i just got the cheapo 4gb ram @ $25/e SODIMM from lazada. Works, and i dun care.

When I first started looking around for parts, I called around the major shops in Sim Lim asking for motherboard/CPU combos like the J3455. Was surprised to find that couldn't find any shops that stock them. Tried calling some distros, same answer. Perhaps I missed some out, but yeah, seems these integrated solutions aren't as common. Barring someone kind enough to come forward with an alternative, think I'll just go with the J3455 from Newegg since it's the most current mb/cpu combo I came across.

Further thanks to your kind replies I've gone ahead and contacted Infinity about custom ordering that case. The guy on the phone mentioned that he'd call their supplier and get back to me. Corbell quoted me $200++ when I called a month back. Not a price I'm willing to pay so.. Fingers crossed.

That being said really hope for case recommendation still. Something that could possibly hold up to 5-6bays, doesn't have a funky dangling setup like the Node 304, and ideally not as large as your typical mATX tower chasis.

The price i got was back in 2014. So inflation might have kicked in

There is a reason why i have stuck to Lian Li and not the others

1. Aluminium after years still looks SHIOK aka As good as new
SECC rusts. Power coat if not scratched is ok but does not have a solid feel.

2. Lian Li uses pretty standardised parts and has a solid build
It feels and looks nice.

3. I was looking for something with drive bays for ease of maintenance.
I have used multiple V2000B Chassis in the past for 20 HDD storage NAS back in the days when 320gb was king. short of drive cages in dedicated but noisy rackmounts, slide out drive bays make maintenance easy.

Whoa interesting... how many drives you have connected?

Also im not familiar with embedded intel chip mobos. Will definitely research more on that.

What mobo & case are you using?

Cool! I was just wondering how is the size compared to the Lian Li PC Q25 and below is the comparison.

I'm elated to know that the U-Nas from taobao is smaller... but found out that the size for the PSU (1U Flex) is rather "uncommon". Finding replacement would be hard, no?

Looked at the Silverstone and the all plastic construction was such a put off considering the price.

InWin was a contender till I realized that it cost almost $280 from Newegg and almost $180 from TaoBao before shipping.

U-Nas seems to only have 4-bays on TaoBao. At the right price definitely a contender. U-Nas-400 is listed for about $140 and the newer U-Nas-410 goes for about $155. My Chinese isn't good enough to figure out what's the difference between the two and my limited experience with TaoBao means I have no idea what shipping work out to be.

What's the item cost/shipping price breakdown for your U-Nas N-400? Do you know what's the difference between the N-400/NSC-410 versions?

Where did you get that FSP Flex Gold PSU and how much you pay for it? I only found a bronze being sold by t258jgn.

Still toying with the idea of using a PicoPSU. Heard it improves temp/noise/power draw/space but never built with one before so a little hazy on specifics. Anyone here experienced with PicoPSUs? Tried contacting the guy that used to sell those here (goes by the name Minisupply10) but he seems to have vanished.
