I got a new rig about three months ago.

CPU & Mobo: i5-3470 & Asrock B75 Pro 3M
Ram: G.Skill 1600mhz value ram 2x4GB
ODD: HP 24x DVD-RW
HDD: Western Digital 1TB Blue 64MB
SSD: Plextor M5P 128GB
GPU: Powercolor 7870 Myst
Case: Sharkoon T28 Green
PSU: FSP Raider 550W

Almost a week after, it started to freeze during games especially when playing LOL. It would also freeze randomly on other games like XCom, which is offline.

Then it started to go into Blue Screen.

I brought it back to the shop which I got it from Best Buy. They tested the hardware and said no problems and said I should reinstall Windows.

I did but the problems persisted. I brought back a second time and after testing for two days, they said it was the ram and replaced it.

But guess what, the freezing persisted.

Wanted some advice: If its not the ram, what would cause such problems? I'm thinking its the GPU. Or could it be the Mobo?

I gave up on bringing back to the shop. They are nice guys and I've no problems with them. But this is a problem I really want to fix.

If got advice, appreciate in advance. Open to buying a cheap GPU to test or if got a good independent repair guy, who can get to the bottom of this, am willing to pay. I just want to have a basic functioning machine.

Forgot to add that I've updated all drivers and temp of GPU is within normal range

so u bought it 3 months ago and only 1 week after u bought it it started giving problems? sounds like bad ram.

i have a similar config but chose Corsair vengeance 1600mhz 4gb x 2. after using a few days started to crash and blue screen. thot it was SSD problem because i clone my HDD to my SSD so i went to RMA my SSD and reinstall windows. problem persist so i tried running memtest and sure enough, ram problem

i tell story juz fyi: all the companies like Gskill kingston and corsair dont have their own memory chip making factory so they buy their chips from the 4 big companies samsung hynix etc. these big companies run tests and filter the best and most reliable chips and keep to themselves, remainder 10% or so which still can be used but are the lowest grade (aka high chance of failing) they sell to small fish. these small companies run their own test and filter even more, better chips become 1866 or 2133mhz while the lousier ones get packaged as 1333 or 1600. so in effect we are buying the trash of samsung etc :s13:

Even buying a HP or DELL can still have a possibility of this happening...:)

Since you purchased from Best Buy, you should get them to fix the issue. They earned your money so they should fix the issue unless they prove to you for sure it is a software issue caused by your OS. Even HP or DELL will have to find out the root cause of the issue every time you send them for repair.

bring it back to them since you bought from them and they have an obligation to help you when your PC is having problems.

i have an almost similar issue with you, but instead of freezing, i keep getting random BSODs. Also bought from same shop too, my ram suddenly died after 3 months of usage. but i got it replaced and now everything is silky smooth again. this is a really heng suay thing la.

for your case, i think it might be the PSU

no matter which shop u buy from as long as it doesnt work in the first 7 days it is their obligation to help u fix it, provided u buy all or most of the parts from them. make them make that obligation if they dont say it themselves (ie "any problem 7 days come find us")

advantage of DIY is longer warranty (2-3yrs) and better parts
disadvantage is troubleshoot yourself, then send the faulty part to manufacturer

from my experience HP Dell Acer have a different problem altogether. They will give u a PC working out of the box, but once the warranty expire good luck to you. Their power supply is designed to work just at the minimum level required (if the parts require 190W they will give u 200W PSU). PSU output decreases over time so just when the warranty end, the PC will start hanging/crashing. Number 1 cause of problems in PC sold by manufacturer is not enough power supplied which is kinda stupid since a 500W generic PSU can be bought for $15 at SLS. Manufacturer buy in bulk maybe $5 each?

really i cannot stress how stupid and a joke this problem is... personally i have a acer which came with a 200W power supply that is trying to power a Core 2 Duo and ATI graphic. i have helped others fix their PC, HP giving 300W. Even the predator series of gaming desktop from acer only has a 450W PSU. design to fail so the clueless will buy new computer every 1-2yrs or pay $$$ for the warranty technician to replace a $15 part

Yeah, since the year 2000, I have not brought any branded PC/desktop as I like to DIY the PC/desktop myself and best of all I can choose which PC component to use for my setup.

But my advise is if the person is not knowledgeable in DIY parts and assembly and after-sales support from distros. It will make a lot of sense buying from a branded PC manufacturer instead.

To TS,
Yeah, at first glance it does look like a PSU issue. But will suggest a part by part test if possible as if you got a bad PSU, then other parts may be affected as well.
