Hi,

For the last week, my cpu temp have been hitting 95-99°C range when at full cpu usage (with or w/o gaming). Before that, the max cpu temp is in the range of 70-75°C (with or w/o gaming). This only happens after I re-routed the cables so that none are blocking the airflow and adding 1 more case fan. Idle cpu temp is in the range of 49-53°C.

As far as i know from the internet, the cpu will throttle at very high temp and shut down to prevent damage. I hope that there is no permanent damage done to the cpu as everything seems fine when surfing net, watching videos or playing games like CS:GO (no bsod or stuttering/lag during gaming). GPU temp is normal at around 70°C. All fans are working and I don't think there is any loose cable as well. Rig is built in Nov 2014. Please help as I don't know what went wrong. Thanks.

CPU/MB: i5-4460 (Stock Fan) + MSI B85-G43 Gaming
GPU: Sapphire R9 280 3GB DRR5
SSD: Crucial MX100 256GB
HDD: WD Blue 500gb
RAM: G.Skill 8gb 1600mhz Value Ram
PSU: Supeflower HX600
Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2
OS: Win 8.1

Remount your heaksink / CPU cooler, then test the temp again. If the temps are not improiving, detach your CPU cooler / heatsink and reapply thermal paste. Make sure the heatsinkis mounted properly.

Remounted the heatsink/cooler. Seem like the thermal paste is not evenly spread and are concentrated on the right half of the cpu. Max temp is back to around 75°C. Does this affect the cpu performance? Should I reapply the thermal paste? If yes, which thermal paste is recommended? Thanks.

If max temp is back to 75, I think it is okay now. Just observe it for a while. If it is still performing badly, just go SLS and get a tube of Arctic MX 4, should last you almost forever. Make sure to clean copper contacts properly and the chip when reapplying with a tissue, or best with just a little bit of Isopropyl alcohol - surgical spirit.

i don't think it's thermal paste. i've been applying pea size countless of times and no issues. anyway, i read somewhere heatsink may not be mounted properly and one even noticed huge temp change placing casing flat instead of tower. sometimes, little things like tat can make all the difference. or if u got spare cpu or heatsink, just swap and test. diy is like tat. should always keep spares for troubleshooting.

Idle temp: <40°C
Max temp: around 70°C
Will monitor to see whether the temp increases again. To be on the safe side, will also buy and apply new thermal paste.

Thanks for all the help.
