Help Diagnosing CPU [Solved]

Hi all,

Computer refuses to boot and my hypothesis is the MOBO is dead. Would like to seek help on how I can verify if it is my MOBO or chip that died. Would like to just salvage as much as possible.

1. Switch on, fans start spinning but do not see any boot up sequence.
2. Fans will slowly stop, then try to restart again (like the com is trying to wake up but keep failing)
2. Tested with only on board graphics card and 1 stick of ram (tried both stick and at different slot but nothing works)
3. Bought and tested w another working PSU 600W, but same result as (1).

Again, seek experts' advice on whether my hypothesis is correct, and how I can proceed further w the testing to salvage the remaining part. Extremely grateful for the help in advance!

If mobo is dead, then need 3in1 (cpu/motherboard/memory).

Looks like dead MB to me.

Either replace the MB or CPU+MB+RAM.

Was thinking can re-use the ram if I bought a replacement that uses DDR3. Then next, is the question of whether I can skimp out on just buying the mobo (if I am able to test and verify that the chip works?)

Did you try to reset the CMOS and run without RAM sticks?


The computer should boot before shutting down without RAM.


Plug it back in


Sometimes just do a deep discharge to clear residual current.

yes that would be the most feasible solution. provided if you can find the mobo. if the system you are using is very basic, then its worth a shot trying to replace mobo. very unlikely for cpu to fail but i won rule that out.

Just cleared the CMOS by removing the battery and shorting it. Still the same issue, I can hear the click of the PSU running, then stopping. And it just keeps repeating without a boot-up on the screen. Looks like MOBO is confirmed gone..,

Inferring from PC part picker, have decided to pick up a Asrock B75M-GL LGA1155 DDR3 Mobo from Carousell @ SGD 70. Fingers crossed this solves the mobo issue.

Fingers crossed my Windows 7 OEM somehow is able to boot on the new Mobo... if not I will be out of pocket again.

OS(OEM version) is usually tied to the mobo. You'd need to call Microsoft and explain your situation then ask em for a new key.

Thanks everyone! Managed to source for a replacement mobo from carousell, a similar model but the full sized-version in fact! Now it is running smooth, booting straight into Windows with no hiccups (smaller monitor).

Next, to look at 1060 second hand prices and also some USB & HDMI switches to manage the desktop and laptop combo.

wow i just got this issue today and my mobo was a gigabyte h77. i even went to buy a new psu too thinking it was the issue. after fiddling much i think i figured out its probably the bios being corrupted and the gigabyte having 2 bios on it just made it worst. you probably can google gigabyte bios boot loop and theres a youtube video on it.

i have only managed to get my bios to recover itself from backup bios once after it said the main bios was corrupted. only managed to get to the windows loading circle that is before reaching desktop and blue screened there. think restarting so many times screwed my hard disk os. after the blue screen the whole power on and off non stop start again. guess the bios got corrupted again. since then i havent manage to successfully recover the bios again. still unable to fix this problem.

Sorry to hear that bro. I also went out to buy another PSU before I replaced my Mobo. If it's any consolation, you're not alone!

finally managed to fix it. had to use paper clip to short the main bios chip pins for it to overwrite the bios from the backup bios.
