[HELP] Do we defrag SSD ?

Can I ask do we defrag SSD , or rather can we ?

Some articles that I googled from says it is bad for the SSD to be defrag , and normally defrag is for HDD.

Anyone can help me with this ?
And also who defrag their ssd before ?

Please don't defrag SSDs, it will only shorten it's lifespan.

This is true. The time spent to defrag the drive is better spent formatting, and doing a clean install.

Defrag for an SSD is bad as there is plenty of write activities when you do that. And the more you write to the SSD, the more the lifespan decline. There is also absolutely no reason why you need to defrag an SSD. Prob with mechanical drive is that it needs to seek the data when you launch say an application. When you defrag, system will put related data together to reduce the time required for the drive to seek the data. On an SSD, the seek time is negligible, thus, it can be very fragmented, but there is barely any noticeable difference in performance.

Anyway, at least you asked and should stop running defrag on the drive.

Not a good ideal too. SSD has short life against write activity. This is also why defrag is not recommended.

To be honest, I prefer to just leave the SSD as it is. No need for much maintenance based on my usage pattern. I do leave it to run TRIM once in awhile. Some SSD comes with application that will help to do the same, to keep the SSD speedy.

What utility did you use for the defragmentation. If you had use the utility that comes with Windows 8, that is fine. Windows 8 optimize operation actually detect that the drive is a non-spinning drive and performs TRIM operation instead on the SSD. If you are using other operating system, then yes. Do NOT run defragmentation on the SSD.

I am SSD / HDD / Server Desktop expert. Answering your question - you DO NOT defrag SSD. SSD not require defrag. It know your file location without rotating. Defrag will actually shorten the SSD life. you do defrag on hdd only because HDD need to spin to find your data.
