[Help] Dropped my macbook

Hi guys, i recently dropped my rMBP. There is no physical damage to be seen. However, it can no longer boot up. If i attempt to boot it up, I can hear the login sound and see light at the apply logo, but the screen is blank. The only way to boot it up is to connect to an external display and boot it up in safe mode. Any attempts to boot it in normal mode using an external display will result in it getting stuck at the loading bar. I ran the apple diagnostic test and it return VFD002 error which indicates a display problem, Is it possible that the display connection came loose when i dropped the MBP? Or is it more likely that the whole display is damaged already?

I'm 3 months out of warranty already. Would be glad if someone knows roughly what's wrong so I don't have to spend a bomb repairing it.

You might have damaged a connector to the screen on impact or perhaps the screen itself has been damaged internally on impact.

Only way is to replace it but MBP screens are notoriously costly to replace and bringing it to 3rd party repair shops other than those authorised ones, you may not get what you expected at a risk.

You can DIY the MacBook screen. Did it for my MacBook Air, not sure about retina version.

The repairability score for retina macbook is 1/10 by ifixit. I recommend you try to bring to authorise apple service center(Alab/QCD) if expensive, head to sim lim square to those apple repair shop to quote price.

The LCD itself cost 400USD.

QCD/ALAB is quoting about $900 without labor cost for repair to the LCD. If i remember correctly, you can go check. Sim lim quote about $600

Thanks for the advice guys. I have sent it in to an authorised service centre for assessment and quotation. Hopefully it wouldn't be too expensive

I'm guessing it's at the upper 900 range. Last time I went with the broken screen, they charged me 972 sgd. Why would I pay 3/4 of a mba price just for a screen?

Naturally I took a bet and managed to fix it myself and yes, I changed the LCD, which took me 4 hours -.- ( I spent ard 200 plus)

I guess TS can buy the full lid portion, the entire upper aluminum where he can just swap out without operating on the panel. I've checked the prices and it's around 300 plus usd max, including shipping.

Hey there, thanks so much for the suggestion! I guess I might try this method out if they quote me $1k for the repair. I'm just uncertain if the problem lies with the display or with the motherboard. The guy at the service centre told me it might be a display problem or a faulty connection at the motherboard side So i guess it might be safer to let them diagnose the problem first (if they will even do it without charging me for that haha)

Perhaps borrow an adapter from your peers and try it out with an external monitor. If it boots, most probably it's the screen.

No harm asking them to check for you, just make sure they don't charge you. Haha!
