I recently purchased windows 10 home from PCThemes @ $158, believing it to be retail instead of OEM.

The product description in the pricelist is:
WINDOWS 10 HOME PREM 32/64BIT

No where in the description is it written as OEM.
However, after installation I did a verification and found that my product ID ends with OEM.

Do I have a case to seek PC Themes for a refund or exchange?

Short update here.

Just got issues with my mobo and need to RMA it.

Called up Microsoft and the official reply from them is that I cannot transfer my OEM license even if my MOBO is spoilt. I'm interested to know how other people here actually get to transfer their OEM. Please advise, thanks.

Retail package isnt $158. Is more than that. And in sls, most of the shops sells oem. And since you used it just live with it. No refunds.

$158 is OEM price. Retail price shld hover ard $299.

Call PCThemes ask them if can do an exchange. Highly likely they and u need to liaise with Microsoft to transfer license if need be.

Also, you ought to know it is OEM. Retail version comes in a Microsoft box.

You just answered yourself. Retail Windows are never selling for just $100+... :s22:

Can only blame yourself for not clarifying with them. :s22:

I didn't ask whether its OEM or not because I thought the name doesn't have OEM, so it should be retail. Its also partially because I saw Fuwell pricelist got indicate OEM besides some Windows version, and automatically assumed no OEM wording = retail. Bad assumption then :(

The only thing I asked was whether do they have a USB version. The person just told me SG don't have USB version, thats all.

I just did a quick check and realised SG don't have boxed version either, and MSRP for Win 10 home retail is $229.

Whichever it is, there's nothing wrong with OEM version. Just that you can only 'legally' activate it on one motherboard model. And you are hardly ever going to change PC again using back the same OS version...

And luckily you bought OEM version cos Retail version is only for noobs to think only Retail version exists. And that is how Microsoft earn so much from mainstream sector....

OEM Windows since Windows 7 already comes in nice DVD jewel box too

Well, the one I got is not even in a DVD Jewel Box. However, I didn't know its OEM since I don't even know how the packaging looks like.

The Hitachi 4TB HDD I bought on that day also comes without a box, just enclosed in an anti static wrapper. Do I have to check whether its second hand now?

Hm... I was under the impression that Retail is more worth it for Windows 10 since they are not going to upgrade the version number anymore. There will be service packs and other changes along the way, but I should be able to retain the retail license. I'm looking at retaining the license for at least 6 - 8 years, which I'll definitely be changing my hardware by then.

OEM won't be different from Retail for most home users. If you change your hardware, just give a call to MS to re-activate Windows, tell them your motherboard spoil and you need to replace it. Some of the time, OEM will still activate without you needing to call MS.

Bro MoneyFace,

I saw your thread last time about the windows. The price is very cheap, but we need to download the windows ourselves and they given the key to us only.

Can share the link again?

Hi TS,
You may get the key as well from them with a quite cheap price.

So nice... My Win 8 OEM (from PCT) came in cardboard/paper sleeve.

Not my pic, but this is how it looked:

Yup just realised both Windows 8 and 10 OEM and retail using cheapo 'minimalism' cardboxes... :s22:

I think only Windows 7 received best treatment...
