[HELP] High core temps

Hey guys, i was running dota 2 with background browser streaming youtube video.

Then suddenly i had a huge spike and some lag on the system so i decided to check out what was wrong.

I touched my casing and found that it was quite hot so i decided to download cpu monitor with core temp to check if my hunch was right.

I did the same again and look what was the output



My cpu is only clock at 3.6Mhz when it happened and though it shows 255 degrees Celsius it was at 159 at the point that it was lagging bad...(that is still a high high high temp)

Any pros can help me figure out whats causing this problem???

Oh ya forgot to mention,

CPU: AMD FX 8150
Mobo: MSI 970A-G45
PSU: FSP 550w gold modular

Fans: 1 rear, 1 side + Dark Knight SD1283 HSF

Wow... that temp is not normal. Check if your heatsink is sitting properly on the CPU. I recommend running some stability tests like Prime or IBT to generate load on the CPU. Then see if the temp will stabilise.

Likely mobo can't handle CPU well, similar case
... and then spike up to 255° C for no apparent reason

no it did not...

255C is apparently a BIOS induced fake reading to force CPU clock throttling in the event of VRM overloading, so it would not cause any shutting down.

btw, 255 is also the largest 8 bit number in decimal notation.
What is the largest prime number that can be stored in 8 bit memory

Anyways, I have written an email to them (Corbel) with regards to my problem.

I hope they do reply my email and give me a solution to my problem...

From bro Macclipper post, it seems that the head office is willing to let the user have an upgrade. i hope they give me the upgrade for free though...need to pray and hope the problem does not cause my CPU to burn out

Use HWMonitor and post the screenshot here.
255 is obviously not the real temp. Your cpu would have auto shut down then.

Like Mac said, its the BIOS sending a false max temp to throttle the vrm, so HWmonitor would probably pick up the 255 reading also.

180C - melting point of unleaded solder
220C - melting point of leaded solder

So at 255C, your CPU circuits will be swimming in liquid solder liao

obviously 255 is just the highest 8 bit value the temperature sensor could output thus 255 degree C. It could very well be a bug in the BIOS....

Yeah, mobo messing around with the temperatures. Seriously, I have a bad impression of MSI mobos for AMD chips since Phenom II...

If u can check ur GPU temps it can be a very very very rough gauge of how bad the overall temp in ur case is. Since ur mobo sensors are not reading correctly

yea...it is really that hot...i can feel the fan sucking out all the hot air and blowing on my feet...
