hi,

I have been browsing many angmoh sites on picking laptops but I am getting overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information presented to me.

I'm going to be moving around (staying overseas) for a few months and I want a good desktop replacement. I'm a heavy user (12 hr/day on average).

Main uses:
-Poker (pokerstars)
-Gaming (dota 2)
-Videos

Portability issues aren't too important. I wouldn't mind having a bigger screen but I'm already considering getting another monitor.

I've been looking at a few brands (Alienware, Razer, Dell, ASUS, MSI) and the high end brands seem way too expensive, I suppose I'm looking for a value-for-money laptop with reasonable performance. Any recommendations?

thanks

What is your budget?
You can try Dell or Asus around $999 to $1200 range.

Bottom line is that you'll want to get a laptop with discrete graphics card,
preferably at least a Geforce 740M/840M, Radeon M265 or better.

Some examples from Dell:

Inspiron 14 5000 - $1199
Intel i7 4510U - Dual core 2Ghz
8gb(4gbx2) ram in dual channel
AMD Radeon HD R7 M265
1TB SSHD (8GB cache)
No optical drive
No Numpad keys
14" screen (1366 x 768)

Inspiron 15 3000 - $1199
Intel i7 4510U
8gb(8gbx1) ram in single channel
NVIDIA GeForce 840M
1TB HDD
DVD drive
15.6" screen (1366 x 768)

For Asus laptops, you might want to check out outlets like courts, challenger etc because the online website do not show the full range of available laptops in the market. Pricing wise between stores, they should be somewhat the same, but do note of the freebies given, sometimes even for laptop models with just 4gb ram, they do throw in another 4gb upgrade.

hi godeau,

thanks for the advice. I don't have any strict budget - I can definitely afford a more expensive computer but I don't want to pay extra for something I don't need, but I don't need a super budget computer either.

Poker - this is my main job and often I'll have to load some database program which might get a little laggy so maybe I'll need 512GB SSD

Games - I don't need max graphics settings but I don't want it to lag and I don't want to be forced to run them at min settings. I don't play the latest games though, so this is probably less important.

Does weight Matter to you? So all you need is space and Speed?

What about MSI GP series?

There are 17 inch and 16 inch models available.

You may add one SSD and this model can support output external monitors :)
