Help in degree choices

I am considering between NUS bizad (finance) and NTU Accountancy. Definitely want to go into the business sector in the future but not sure where exactly. NUS bizad (finance) is a general degree but it has the brand name of NUS which I think far surpasses that of NTU. Whereas Accountancy is a professional degree but I'm not sure if that is what I plan on doing in the future. Would appreciate some advice, thanks!

Whether BUS bizad (finance) can do, NTU Acct also can do. However BUS bizad (finance) cannot get CA Sg (Acct Licence in laymen term) while NTU Acct can. So Acct degree is better in term of can do more jobs.

If you are finding job in Sg, both have the same standing. If you are finding job overseas, they may think NTU is from china.

So why not you consider BUS bizad (Acct) which is the best option?

Not very true Finance and accountancy are very different and i believe NTU Act students do not take finance specialisation (unless they are double degree biz act)

Yes a lot of people do transfer to finance eventually. Just put yourself in the shoes of an employer, do you think they will start at the same rank? Would the engineering students take up finance classes eventually? It really depends!

Also, NUS Business students can request transfer to Accountancy, if they perform well after a semester or two.

Personally, I feel that NUS Business is very popular, they have new curriculum and great reputation/brand and facilities. I would also strongly encourage you to consider NTU Accountancy if you want to be an auditor or tax specialist. Accounting is a professional degree, unlike business. On top of that, NTU accountancy is the extremely established and have a huge pool of alumni.



The choice is still yours to make!

So, are you sure fresh engineering graduate, fresh business graduate, fresh accounting graduate & fresh finance graduate are not starting the same rank in Finance sector?

Completely agree with this. The only headstart that finance majors have is the few modules learnt in school which can be picked up on the job or learnt outside school. There aren't any concrete skills learnt compared to accountancy and engineering. Business degrees are general degrees and the majors are there to somewhat refine the scope but ultimately you don't get that technical skill and analytical ability of professional degrees.

Imo, the updated BBA curriculum looks very attractive. If finance is what you want then go for it. But if you're undecided, choose accountancy because it can lead you to finance as well. If you choose accountancy, NTU NBS is definitely the most well established in Singapore.

Interesting perspective. I have to agree with you on this point. Also the reason why i choose NUS Accountancy because my some of my seniors said business is still a general degree afterall x.x

I would say. Financial related stuff can learn on the job. But there's a trend slanting towards engineering student due to their ability to do advance maths. The engineering discipline provide a rather slight advantage.

Agreed. Engineers are mathematically inclined and also because of their problem solving skills, they could switch to certain industries easily.
