Hi,

I bought my hp ProBook recently with RAM 16GB and i7 8th Gen, but realised that my laptop gets too hot when I run games or play videos.

Any way that I can reduce its heating effect? Thanks. :)

You can attempt to replace the stock thermal paste

Get a laptop cooler.

Lower down the CPU max power to like maybe 50%

When you mentioned that it is too hot, what is the temp and why do you think it is a problem?

I am asking the questions because it is not uncommon for slim laptops to run hot. I don't know which HP Probook model you are using but I assume if it is purchased in the last year or so, then it should be pretty slim.

Sure thing. I'll put down the specs later for my comp, and temp on diff occasions.

I was just asking a general question so as to know what causes laptop to be this hot. That's the problem: it really is quite hot around the fan area (idk the technical terms, noob here). Feels as if my hand is gonna get burnt or sth if I leave my hand around that area.

I went to HP Support for A/S, and the serviceman said something about HP Probook models are usually hot like this (as what you said about thin laptops), and he mentioned about the material. He said something about heat conduction is good so that it will lose heat faster or sth.

Just trying to find ways that can cool my computer down that won't be so costly because I don't think my laptop will live long like this. Lol.

Searching online kinda helped me in some ways. Tbh I think laptop coolers are great and I've been using one, so if you see my recent post, I posted a thread on promos to getting cooler (and earpiece coz I lyk moozik).

Hope this thread gave you a rough idea about why I asked for help. Thanks for asking! :)

I searched online about it but I don't really get what it is about. For a newly bought laptop and went through A/S - oh btw the serviceman cleaned out the dust for me coz Internet said that's the problem - but even now it still is hot, and it is a little uncomfortable. Like w/o laptop cooler, the heat is legit crazy.

Pls give me more info about it! I find it interesting.

Got one laptop cooler that is decent. Nice but a bit big only. Trying to find btr one coz I have an old laptop that suits the size more. I'll put down the product details ltr...

How to lower down the CPU max power? What are some downsides as I lower it down?

No worries. I asked those questions because I feel that it may not be a big problem. Because the laptops are thin and in some cases, comes with a metal chassis, it will surely run hot, especially at the vent area. Because that is where the heatsink is, and the area will heat up quite a lot.

As long as it is not giving you any issues like freezing screen, etc, it should not be a problem.

u can go over to the control panel and find power, find the plans u want, balance plan will be better -> change plan settings -> processor-> max -> 60% 1st and slowly up abit like 2% increment if u find it too laggin.

well if u dun play games there is basically no downside. but if u do, its slightly tone down the cpu power, thus giving a slightly lower framerates, but depends largely on the games u play.

As long as there are no blockage in the laptop vent area should be fine.

Even i am not running games i can feel the heat and the sound it make at time quite often.
But it can cool down and the sound would have gone away after awhile.. and then it would repeat again.

Most brand laptop do come with PC Health Monitor enable.
So make full use of it and make the necessary changes to suit to your needs.

Many things can contribute to higher running temps as ken mentioned;

- Youtube 50/60fps
- Errant web script in web browser
- Charging of battery
- Background windows update
- Background windows data collection
- Aggressive CPU profile set by OEM
- Poor fan thermal profile (like Apple's MBP fans turning on only @ 80deg)
- Poor TIM application/quality
- Minuscule heatsink size
- Heatsink clogged with dust
- etc etc.

No worries. I asked those questions because I feel that it may not be a big problem. Because the laptops are thin and in some cases, comes with a metal chassis, it will surely run hot, especially at the vent area. Because that is where the heatsink is, and the area will heat up quite a lot.
