Help needed - DSLR/Mirrorless as a gift

I need help here, can any one recommend me a DSLR, below are the criteria:

1.Budget - $1,500
2. Newbie, therefore need easy to use
3. Semi dslr also fine
4. Stylish looking
5. Not too bulky

are the mirrorless camera good? I'm looking at Canon EOS M or the olympus pen... which one better?

Agreed. Yeah the 5R would be a good place to start. Comes with a flipping screen that lets you take self-portraits more easily which I presume a newcomer would like to see.

Else, I think you would do just as fine with an Oly EPL5, less than $1k with kit lens if I recall correctly, notwithstanding the fact that the OMD EM5 does everything better but at a higher cost.

Otherwise if you dont mind a little more bulk but at still a very light weight, it's a good time to get the Canon 650D. As the 700D, the latest model, is essentially a 650D with a few very marginal upgrades, the price of a new 650D kit would be fairly reasonable. It will last your friend a good year plus as he/she embarks on the photography journey.

From my POV, tad small and light. But probably will be good enough for general use. Why not consider the GF6? It is meant to be an 'everyday' camera and its way lower for ur budget.

Some opinions as a Sony Nex C3 user.

You might want to consider to get the Nex6 instead. Nex6 comes with several enhancements on the sensors, auto focus mechanisms, which will make general photography alot more enjoyable. In addition, the built in EVF will come very handy when u take photos under bright sunlight (the LCD screen is almost unusable in bright sunlight).

However, Sony Lens are, i feel, are a tat more expensive compared to other systems.
