Help needed for further studies

Hi there, I am not your regular Singapore cream of the crop citizen. I came from a humble beginning due to my playful background and all. I made it through 'N' Levels, ITE NTC2 in Computer Tech(Electronics) then worked for several years. Thereafter, I took a private Diploma and is gainfully employed today in relevance to my diploma at profession. Problem is, I would very much like to further my education in uniSIM but I am very well sure of the criteria. Anyway to seek/appeal for exception or based on professional capacity? I was rejected this Jul 2013 intake exercise. Please advise. I am in my late 20s. I'm sure the uni-admin office won't take my passion speech and work done to convince them of my need for the studies. What can I do?

So where is your diploma received from? Unisim now accepted as 6th publicly funded university of Singapore, confirmed stricter in admission standard now.

So what work have you done, and what is your profession. I suppose engineering or IT related, since your ITE cert is computer tech (engineering)? If it is the Aviation Maint, I think its quite difficult as the degree is given together with ERAU.

Since you are in late 20s, I suppose you have had at least 3 to 5 years of Full time consecutive or total work experience?

Hi Successor, thanks for your response, in short I am currently in a Social Sector/Government-people helping. My Diploma was done in Kaplan, Diploma in Counseling. My job dispense career advisory and counseling. Total of about 10 year working years. I really hope to further my studies to augment my work and advisory acumen thru Degree in Sociology. Was told to take SAT, if not go back and take my 'O' Levels even at this age.

Kaplan's diploma IMO is not recognised, it is a mere fast track solution for those who wants to further their undergraduate studies under Distance Learning. It is of no contribution value. I just want to understand why you didn't choose to pursue local polytechnic after your ITE?

Secondly, your ITE certification in Comp (engineering) is totally unrelated to your diploma studies/qualifications. So the diploma is basically a mere diploma qualification and adds no further value to the field of sociology or counselling.

I now got 1 simple solution, get an advance diploma from local polytechnics studying on a part time basis. From what I know RP and SP offers them. The advance diploma takes less then a year.

Otherwise, you can consider heeding Unisim's advice of taking SAT and/or retake O levels. My take on why that advice is because they want to gauge your standard.

So before I end this lengthy speech of mine. Take a look at the criteria of Unisim's admission.

•GCE 'A' level with two passes (prior to 2006) or two H2 passes (from 2006), or local Polytechnic Diploma or International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or NUS High School Diploma
•Two years of work experience or is currently employed on a full-time basis
•21 years old and above

So you see why you didn't got accepted? Private diploma are subjected to case by case basis and as I explained, its not really recognised unless for Distance Learning degree purposes.
Unless you have strong related work experience, you may get accepted and that you have to gauge for yourself.

You may also considered getting referees from your work place if necessary to strengthen your application as stated "passion in the field"

Kaplan diploma I suppose is considered under private qualifications, so a SAT is required and also is accepted on a base by case basis.

Quite a few say private diploma's aren't accepted. You may want o enquire more specifically from UNISIM on that.

SAT might be a good solution to your problems. Soci is definitely not an easy course to take. If it is anything similar to local uni standards, you're gonna have to do tons of readings and essay writings. Doing the SAT is simple and cheap. You can also take as long as you want or as short as you want to study for it. The language skills that you gain while studying for the sat will really help you in your course of study for your degree.

On a side not, it has finally begun. Unisim is going to be stricter now since there will be more applicants attracted to its newfound status.

anw accompanied gf to the open house, was told vacancies already not enough for all the eligible poly dip & A lvl applicants. private dip sure rejected.

my guess is they are starting to 'take action' cos in the process of rolling out full time publicly-funded degree progs, the part time progs must at least be on-par with them.

I can confirm that apart from SIM Dip, other Pte Dip is not recognized by UniSIM anymore.

Your only choice to get into UniSIM Degree course is to study SIM Dip.

Dear all, thanks so much. Will take all these pointers into consideration. Successor, thanks so much.. nope you ain't lengthy. I needed these info. Noted on the matter of Pvt Dip and taking a local Adv Dip. Will look into it. Just sad that the education system is very narrow for us Sinkies.

can you handle reading marx, weber, durkheim (and those are easy), and then graduate on to reading foucalt, wallerstein, bourdeiu and other contemporary thinkers? If your intention is to really help the poor and downtrodden, social work or counseling might be a better fight

In Singapore, you do not have much opportunities to practice career counseling & end up doing recruiting job if you wish to be specialized in 'career counseling field'.
