Help needed to build home workstation~!

Hi everyone, thank you for coming in to help moi.

To preempt you all, I virtually know next to nothing about desktop PCs and its components having used laptops all my life. So I want to build a home rig with dual monitor setup and the purpose of the computer are:

i) mainly used for work, which involves number crunching and huge excel spreadsheets. On this front I think I should probably go for a CPU with at least 4-cores? Was considering Ryzen 5 1600.. Let me know what you think
ii) some gaming, probably football manager and dota 2 on max settings. Was thinking about 1050ti or 1060 3gb.

Budget excluding monitors: $800-$1k.

Also, I've got a 250gb Samsung Evo 840 so I guess I'll be re-using it. Oh and I don't really care about LEDs or overclocking..

Since you know "virtually-nothing" about desktop PCs, DIY building one yourself is going to be a challenge, even with an online guide.

Your best option is to drop by some SLS legit shops like PC Themes, ask them to recommend you a build according to your budget. It's not going to be the cheapest but at least you won't be chopped/scammed by going to the relatively-cheaper ah neh shops.

OS buy for less than $20 from Carousell if needed

Assuming you are getting them to build for you, easier to just get everything from one shop like PCThemes, can ask for discount.

If you want to build yourself, can save money by checking whether its cheaper on Lazada/Qoo10 or other SLS shops pricelist.

Check Youtube for 1060/1050Ti Dota 2 benchmarks, if you feel the 1050Ti is enough, you can use the money to upgrade other stuff like +8GB Ram/better case/better PSU.

If you are just playing Dota2/FM only, I'd suggest 1050Ti and better PSU. 1060 is probably more value for money if you are playing other more graphic intensive games though.

I agree, not easy trying to understand what are the differences between different components. Just trying to learn about which mobo to pick was tough enough already thanks, appreciate your advice.

awesome, point taken. I think theres quite a significant difference in performance between 1060 and 1050ti, but ill decide whether this extra bit of horsepower is necessary or not. Thank you!
