Help needed with upgrading my current rig

Intel Core i7 2600K @ 3.40GHz Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. Z68XP-UD3 (Socket 1155)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 Zotac

This rig is pretty old except for the graphic card which i upgraded 2 years back. I'm currently playing demand games like battlefield and have been experiencing fps drops.

My friend told me the CPU bottlenecks my graphics card so im here to ask the gurus here which hardware will be good to upgrade to.

I'm looking to maybe upgrade to a 144hz gaming monitor at year end as well. if you need more information from me to give me the best advice please ask!

That processor is still fairly capable even for today context. Don't know how come your pc will bottleneck running Battlefield. Try getting a better cpu cooler and overclock it and see if things improve?

That processor is still fairly capable even for today context. Don't know how come your pc will bottleneck running Battlefield. Try getting a better cpu cooler and overclock it and see if things improve?

I just realised my fan for the heatsink isnt working, ordered a new one then will see how it goes.

But my CPU not obsolete yet? If it is do you have any recommendations?

This CPU is still relevant in the market, and i still currently have it too. Still decent for its performance, except that it lacks PCI-E 3.0 support.

This CPU is still relevant in the market, and i still currently have it too. Still decent for its performance, except that it lacks PCI-E 3.0 support.

My rig was first assembled in 2011 so after 5 years i keep wondering whether there is another cpu in the market that can still be relevant for the next few years to replace my current one

Currently its still good for Dota 2, which is the game i play most often since its not a demanding game

other times i play AAA titles like battlefield 1, mass effect which can be demanding on my current system since prolong gaming can make my fps drop to 30 then i have to restart my computer already.

Most likely due to the cpu fan not working and thermal throttle.. surprised that your cpu isn't damaged yet though, your i7 could still be used for a while it's still out performs today's i5 so won't need to change yet. Unless u do really cpu intensive work, even if u upgrade the cpu u won't really feel the difference actually. Since yours is a k chip, just go for overclocking to squeeze every last bit of its juice and let it up lorry before upgrading.

Yea, agreed with joshuaho. Your CPU is a K series, meaning you can overclock provided your motherboard is a Z series chipset which in this case it is. However, before overclocking, ensure that you have the proper cooling and do note that by overclocking, you are voiding your warranty at your own risk. 2600k is still relevant in current world. The performance gain for gaming given current i5 today, isnt that much. The reason for it to drop below 30fps is probably due to thermal throttling which you mentioned the cpu fan isnt working.

Last question, is there a huge difference between cpu fans? mine is a 12x12 fan (spoilt) and i just ordered a cheap 6$ fan as replacement.

Fans play the role of moving air across the heat sink. Also depends on the type of heat sink u are using, since it's a k Better to have a minimum of 6 heatpipe if ur gonna OC (just a rough guide)

Got different types of fans, air flow and static pressure, cpu cooler usually better to use static pressure to efficiently get the air between the fins. Though some may say that there won't be a different since air is still flowing through majority of the heatsink.

If u don't be doing any other upgrade and the only thing u will be changing at this moment is the fan, might want to consider investing in a better air cooler (if yours is not sufficient enough) cryorig CM and noctua offer quite a decent range of air coolers and should be able to meet ur needs

you must know that sandy bridge was such a big leap forward in one generation, after that it was mostly incremental improvements only

Okay thanks for the inputs! On the advice of a friend I also ordered thermal paste because it should have dried up after 5.5 years

Should have just bought a Gentle Typhoon fan from Keyoke or LionPlushie at the hwz marketplace. Really good fans for heatsink. Good for you getting thermal paste also.
