Hello, I am offered CBC and have some questions to ask:

1. How different is the chemistry from JC chemistry? (cause I heard that some people like JC chem but hate uni chem)

2. How long is each lab session? How many per week?

3. Graduates are typically empolyed in which industry?

Thanks in advance.

1. I am not from JC but uni chem is studying chemistry in depth.Expect more drawing of mechanism, synthesis of compounds and understanding the atomic level of molecules.

2.Year 1 shud be 3hrs per week.Year 2 and 3 shud be 6hrs per week.1 session per week.They are really fun.

3.Mostly those chemical sector e.g. Tuas,Jurong. You can also opt for those non-technical side.
A degree is just a qualification. It kind of open a lot of doors

Hmm.. Sounds quite interesting to me. Is it possible for you to send me some notes or exam questions cause I want to see how they are like.

Hi I am also from CBC as well. Will be in Year 2 this upcoming semester and it's great to know there are people who are interested in this course.

To answer your queries,

1. Coming from a JC background, I would say that university level chemistry is much more in-depth. It is good to keep your notes from JC as a fallback or reference but being at a higher level, students are expected to understand more about drawing mechanisms and the subject at more atomic level.

2. For Year 1 courses, lab sessions are 3hrs long whereas in Year 2 and 3, they are 6 hours long.

3. I would say that there is a great diversity in terms of career prospects. I have seniors who went into banking sector despite graduating from CBC.

Hi there, yea I wanted to ask on the reasons why banking sector will hire a person from science background. Isit relatively tough to get in banking sector?

I would say that it's more of the soft skills you pick up throughout the course. For Year 1, you get to take a Mastering Communication module as a prescribed core. It really helps because you can pick up resume and interview skills. These skills can really help you no matter which sector you eventually end up.

Ok, thanks :s13:

manawesome, i think you're from my batch :p

anyway, i'm partially color blind too. and the worse thing is i can't really confirm which colors i really can't see. like very light green and yellow, or very dark blue vs very dark purple. distance and lighting also plays a part -.- however, i have not encountered major problems in CBC lab sessions :) it's true that the practical is individual, but you can still discuss with your labmates and TAs, no worries :)

to comment on CBC's coursework, i find it quite comfortable. lab sessions will be quite stressful at first (especially for organic labs), but you will slowly (or be forced to) get used to it haha. other than that, you just need to be consistent in your work. it isn't SUPER stressful, so don't worry. however, you should still expect some competition from the foreigners in CBC because they are really smart/hardworking. not that you shouldn't be friends with them because of this, but all the more you should mix around with them and work hard yourself :) most CBC people i know, be it locals or foreigners, are very nice people (for my batch at least :p).

if you need any tips or advice, you can also PM me for details :) good luck!

Hi there, appreciate much for your info! :s13:

Yup, I've similar problems as u.. I'm clueless on what types of colours I'm able to differentiate as it seems like I'm able to see most of the colours. And yup, lighting plays quite a fair bit in influencing colour-decision making..

Will lab-work takes up a huge component of your grading? I'm relatively afraid of lab-work due to little exposure back in my jc-days..

Oh, speaking of foreigners, will there be like quite a lot of them in CBC? I assume from your post that there are quite a few foreigners due to your emphasis on foreigners on your post. Haha..

haha, don't worry, color deficiency won't affect you in CBC too much :)

in the past, organic lab modules are 100% labwork and lab reports, but recently, they threw in final exams as well >.< so it becomes like about 50-50% or 60-40% kinda grading. as for physical/analytical lab, there will definitely be final exams, with also a 50-50% or 60-40% kinda grading :)

for the foreigners, CBC's number of foreigners PALES to the number you find in engineering haha. of course there will be a fair number, but don't worry too much. i don't study so much and my grades are usually average/above average i think. haha. and if you wanna worry about smart people, there will be smart locals as well. my batch has a considerable number of locals on the dean's list i think. :p
