Use hotel.com or booking.com to look for best deals

Yes ryokans can be expensive. But rem almost all of them offers half board, ie breakfast and dinner in the room price And mind u the dinner is almost certainly to be sumptuous, be it set meal or buffet. Unlike SG, there's no such things as paying a lot for food only to find them awful tasting or served in tiny portions. Japs takes pride in their work and they're particular about the food they prepare.

The $$ you spend for 3 pax getting similar quality food outside for breakfast n dinner will almost certainly be more than the all in price for a ryokan.

And ryokans typically offer spacious rooms. This is important if you are used to the big hotel rooms in Malaysia or North America.

For Ryokans, I book directly with the ryokans themselves instead of through 3rd party website.

Ryokan experience is quite personal so is better to contact directly with Ryokan.

They will need some information like arrival time -> So that they can either arrange transport for you or wait outside to greet u.
Also you can make certain special request.
Food itself also they need to know your dietary requirement etc etc

Haha but this is you of course! :)
In my upcoming Kyoto trip, I booked a ryokan half board like you said all for 9k JPY. And this is an onsen ryokan. In fact, my most expensive ryokan booking for this trip is 28k at Arima Onsen. So definitely your holidays are of another class compared to mine. Rocketnews website was just recommending a ryokan in Akita recently, have you tried it already?
