Hi everyone,

Quite new to the forum and to investing here.

Wanted to ask if I am keen on investing in stable dividend yielding stocks - which stocks should I be looking at?

Any views or comments will be greatly appreciated - am still a noob :)

Thanks guys.

y so gian about the dividend?

they give you money, XD the share price will drop
they dont give you money the share price wont drop, and you have the option of selling the shares at higher price, anytime you want.

The money is left pocket right pocket.

I rather the company dont give me dividends. If I want dividends i can always sell off a small percentage of my holdings to generate my own dividends anytime. Saves on taxes too.

Oh, I forgot about taxes. Mind if I ask what is the tax rate on dividends?

Just thought of buying some stocks to generate a larger steady stream of cash because bank interest rates are so low now.

In Singapore, you just need to collect the dividends and enjoy.

Dun worry about taxes. :)

As long as you hold the shares until XD, you will get the dividend.

Example, the next XD for Singpost is 13 November. If you hold the shares until 13 November, you will get the dividends. If you sell the shares before 13 November, you will not get the dividends.

Well, assuming a 6% annual yield. You would need around $200k capital.

This is my portfolio. I spent the past 4 years building it.

why hate on dividend stocks?

it is true that when they give money, the share price will drop on XD. when the company gives out 10 cents of dividend, it means that the company de-values by 10 cents.

however, companies do not have to give dividends. companies pay dividends using their profits. so in a way, receiving dividends means that the companies one has invested in is making profits.

dividends are a way of rewarding investors and asking them to stay vested with the company. as long as the dividend payouts are coming from profits and not out of a company's coffers and the dividend payouts arent excessive (and thus leaving no room for growth and expansion), i think dividends are a good thing.

personally, i like to divide my portfolio into 3 broad categories:
1. growth stocks (those i think got potential for huge growth, best if got give abit of dividend, if dont have also not much of an issue. eg. Raffles Medical Grp)

2. income stocks (div stocks + REITS)

3. punting stocks (pennies, just to satisfy my hunger for a gamble :s13:)

Wa. Something to aspire to! ;)

Is there a website I can check for when dividend payout dates are... and how much dividend is expected for a company?

Thanks in advance for the advice on the thread. Everyone has been very helpful

Div Warrior's portfolio has a lot of REITS. REITS pay out distribution income, which is essentially like dividends except that REITS are legally bounded to pay distribution income. Not just are they legally bounded to pay, they have to pay out 90% of their earnings as distribution income.

REITS generally give 5-6% distribution income/dividend. Other companies vary due to the fact that dividends are not must-gives. It is up to the discretion of companies themselves. Starhub for example, gave around 4.5% dividend last yr iirc. On the other hand, Raffles Medical Grp gave around 1.something% last yr iirc.

If you are tempted by dividend/income flow, you can focus on dividend stocks and REITS, tho whether it is a good time to invest in REITS now is another whole new topic.
