Hi all, its been a long while since I was here.
Just got a X870 motherboard and wanted to migrate my WD_Black SN850X over.
But not sure if I can use the Gen 5 M.2 slot or use the Gen 4 M.2 slot since SN850X is rated Gen 4.

Many thanks in advance for the advises given!

The Gen 5 M.2 slot is backwards compatible so you can use either one. Suggest you use the Gen 5 slot.

You can move it seamlessly to PCIE 5.0 NVME M.2 slot.

My sn850x 2tb is sitting inside asus tuf x870 prie 5.0 nvme m.2 slot as OS drive.

the sn850x will work in a gen5 slot, but i would rather put it in the gen4 slot and leave the gen5 slot empty, so if u do get a gen5 drive in the future u can just straight away install and use without having to swap the sn850x to the gen4 slot. not like ur losing much, if anything, putting the drive in the gen4 slot now.

Not sure is my mobo problem or x870 mobo chipset x4 issue.

If running intensive application.my gen4 ssd+10gbps pcie expansion card, the 10gbps expansion card will dc.have to disable and re-enable to resume the network connection.

The pcie expansion slot share with ssd slot.i only install at pcie expansion slot

Can but take note usually for different motherboard best to reinstall the Windows.
I know some just plug in the drive, is can work but how stable is another question.
Is not like on same motherboard than don't need to but new CPU and new mobo
is best to.

Which board ? Some have additional 6 pin connector to supply power to pcie slots.

Asus x870 wifi plus
This reddit thread seems to be related to what you facing ( i assume the 10gbps pcie card you are talking about is ethernet LAN card ) . Not sure if it was conclusive but it seems like it was suggested by 1 poster that it was due to the " 10gbps lan card efficiency settings "
