Hi all,
currently i am looking at setting up a Network NAS for my small startup,
I need to be able to access my NAS when i am oversea, or when i am out of office. My friend intro me Synology NAS. After viewing the intro on youtube, i am still kind of blur, i have a few qn to ask you guy's.

1: Do i need a static ip in order to access my NAS ? (I called Singtel up, it will charge me $290 per mth if i opt for static ip.)
2: Does the internet speed affect the transfer rate of the file? (I am on singtel biz plan at only 512kbps :( )

I am also an IT noob but managed to set up my own NAS for my home network.

(1) Yes, you will need a static IP which you could subscribe from your Internet Provider or sign up with some online providers for free. I signed up with Synology.

(2) The internet speed will affect the transfer rate if you are sending a file via the internet. If it is within your own LAN, it is impacted by your LAN infrastructure.

I am a noob and can't offer a detailed step-by-step configuration. I googled my way to set up my own NAS, which I know the general idea but forgot the details. Else, you could pay someone to set it up for you (which I was tempted to do until I managed to somehow configure the set up myself).

I am using a Synology NAS and find it very user friendly, especially the various iOS apps. I am able to access my NAS via the internet (PC, iPhone, iPad, etc) and would recommend it to you.

it is not static ip, its more like dynamic dns....

you can subscribe from synology or dyndns.org or some others...

basically the nas will report your singtel ip to the server.

for example you have register whizzard.dyndns.org and setup on your nas. Your singtel connection have ip address of 202.153.223.187.

So your nas will periodically report to dyndns.org that whizzard.dyndns.org is 202.153.223.187, so even when singtel give you new ip address, it will report the changes. what you need to know is whizzard.dyndns.org will point to your NAS.

when you access it from external, just point to whizzard.dyndns.org.

there are few options of dynamic dns... pls refer to this guide:
How to access my Synology NAS via th... - Synology Inc. Network Attached Storage - NEW NAS Experience
